Motorola, Intel taking us to the edge in London Sept. 18

Motorola-Intel

Intel and Motorola joined forces earlier this year - now it's time to see the fruits of their labor.

That's a big announcement, eh? Motorola and Intel, the marriage first announced way back in January at CES, finally appears to be coming to fruition. (Right on schedule, actually.) So what will we see when the two companies "take us to the edge" on Sept. 18 in London? Most likely, it'll be a production-caliber Android smartphone based off Intel's Medfield platform that it's been teasing us with lo these many months, with its speed, power and promised battery savings that come from the Atom SOC.

Smartphone? Tablet? As always, we'll be there to bring you the whole thing as it happens. Set your calendars, folks!

Saturn and its largest moon reflect their true colors

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Posing for portraits for NASA's Cassini spacecraft, Saturn and its largest moon, Titan, show spectacular colors in a quartet of images being released today. One image captures the changing hues of Saturn's northern and southern hemispheres as they pass from one season to the next.

The images can be found at http://www.nasa.gov/cassini,http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov and http://ciclops.org .

A wide-angle view in today's package captures Titan passing in front of Saturn, as well as the planet's changing colors. Upon Cassini's arrival at Saturn eight years ago, Saturn's northern winter hemisphere was an azure blue. Now that winter is encroaching on the planet's southern hemisphere and summer on the north, the color scheme is reversing: blue is tinting the southern atmosphere and is fading from the north.

The other three images depict the newly discovered south polar vortex in the atmosphere of Titan, reported recently by Cassini scientists. Cassini's visible-light cameras have seen a concentration of yellowish haze in the detached haze layer at the south pole of Titan since at least March 27. Cassini's visual and infrared mapping spectrometer spotted the massing of clouds around the south pole as early as May 22 in infrared wavelengths. After a June 27 flyby of the moon, Cassini released a dramatic image and movie showing the vortex rotating faster than the moon's rotation period. The four images being released today were acquired in May, June and July of 2012.

Some of these views, such as those of the polar vortex, are only possible because Cassini's newly inclined -- or tilted -- orbits allow more direct viewing of the polar regions of Saturn and its moons.

Scientists are looking forward to seeing more of the same -- new phenomena like Titan's south polar vortex and changes wrought by the passage of time and seasons -- during the remainder of Cassini's mission.

"Cassini has been in orbit now for the last eight years, and despite the fact that we can't know exactly what the next five years will show us, we can be certain that whatever it is will be wondrous," said Carolyn Porco, imaging team lead based at the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colo.

Launched in 1997, Cassini went into orbit around Saturn on July 1, 2004. It is in its second mission extension, known as the Solstice Mission, and one of its main goals is to analyze seasonal changes in the Saturn system.

"It is so fantastic to experience, through the instruments of Cassini, seasonal changes in the Saturn system," said Amanda Hendrix, deputy project scientist, based at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "Some of the changes we see in the data are completely unexpected, while some occur like clockwork on a seasonal timescale. It's an exciting time to be at Saturn."

The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the Cassini-Huygens mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington. The Cassini orbiter and its two onboard cameras were designed, developed and assembled at JPL. The imaging team is based at the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colo.

Lexmark to Quit Inkjet Printer Business - John Paczkowski - News ...

Printer company Lexmark is looking to get out of the inkjet printer business.

The company said Tuesday that it will sack 1,700 employees worldwide and shutter a factory in the Philippines, as it explores selling off its inkjet printer operations. The move is expected to save Lexmark $95 million annually and free up more resources, as it focuses its efforts on higher value managed laser imaging services.

Shares in the company are trading up nearly 13 percent on the announcement.

Hurricane Isaac: New Orleans braces for test of its storm preparations (+video)

With maximum winds from Hurricane Isaac expected to be 80 miles an hour, the storm's main threat is posed by water. The new New Orleans surge barrier has been closed for the first time.

New Orleans calmly waited out another storm on the eve of Hurricane Katrina's seventh anniversary.

And while the storm is expected to make landfall Thursday night with maximum sustained winds of about 80 miles an hour, the storm's biggest threat is posed by water ? from the storm surge initially, along the coast, and flooding inland.

For the first time since it was built following hurricane Katrina in 2005, a $1.1-billion surge barrier has been closed to help protect New Orleans from surge-related flooding. The barrier, some 26 feet high and 1.8 miles long, is designed to prevent a storm surge from rolling up a shipping canal the US Army Corps of Engineers built at the behest of Congress to cut the amount of time it takes for ships to travel between New Orleans and the Gulf.

The canal served as a conduit funneling Katrina's storm surge into a large lagoon dubbed Lake Borgne and on into Lake Ponchartrain.

In addition, following Katrina, the Corps of Engineers was given the job of repairing and upgrading the system of pumps that draw storm water out of New Orleans, just under half of which is below sea level. New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu pronounced all of them ready for operation during Isaac's downpours.

Several parishes have ordered mandatory evacuations for communities on the coast. Isaac's category 1 rating, however, is too low to trigger mandatory evacuations for New Orleans. Even so, at a press briefing Tuesday, Mayor Landrieu strongly encouraged people who live in Orleans Parish outside the city's levee system to evacuate.

Meanwhile, in Washington, President Obama declared states of emergency for Louisiana and Mississippi, setting the stage for the Federal Emergency Management Agency to coordinate relief efforts and provide other forms of assistance to stricken areas.

Isis mobile payment system primed for September launch in Austin and Salt Lake City

You've known it was coming, but Isis has been so quiet on the mobile payments front in the past few months that you might've forgotten the score. Now, the joint venture backed by AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon has announced that it'll debut its system in Austin and Salt Lake City next month. At least part of the delay is attributed to its shift in strategy, when Isis shelved its plans to process payments through the carriers themselves and instead work with MasterCard and Visa. Isis representatives have declined to elaborate on future expansion plans.

Coinciding with the recent update that enabled Isis support for T-Mobile's Galaxy S II, MasterCard has come clean with a list of devices that'll receive similar treatment. Specifically, those in the US can expect the Droid Incredible 4G LTE, One X, Amaze 4G, Galaxy S III to gain Isis support. Naturally, the possibility remains open for other devices as well, and if you'd like to see the complete list of candidates, make sure to check out the PDF below.

IRD Celebrates Successful Year - New Zealand Taxation ...

New Zealand flagThe Inland Revenue Department has seen significant success in fighting tax evasion over the last 12 months, uncovering millions of dollars of tax discrepancies and recovering unpaid student loans.

Last week the Inland Revenue Department released its annual Compliance Focus report, detailing the Department?s efforts to improve tax compliance in the country throughout the last 12 months. Throughout the last year the Department has uncovered approximately NZD 135 million of discrepancies on tax returns, with nearly NZD 44 million of economic activity which was previously undisclosed and part of the hidden economy.

The IRD?s efforts to increase repayment of student loans has also seen success, with the Student Loan Overseas-Based Borrowers initiative resulting in NZD 27.4 million in extra repayments since its launch in October 2010.

As part of its ongoing efforts to increase compliance and weed out tax evasion, the IRD is ?using increasingly sophisticated methods to help customers do the right thing and identify the small number of taxpayers deliberately operating outside of the tax rules.?

The Department?s success has been attributed to a greater access to electronic tools to help check customers? data against information provided by tax authorities overseas and private organizations from around the world.

Through its administrative systems, the Inland Revenue Department has also been able to identify individuals who have filed false claims for Child Support and Working for Families entitlements.

Isaac casts shadow over GOP convention, campaign

(AP) ? Undaunted by Mother Nature, Republicans are set to descend on Florida as Mitt Romney's team works to cram four days of events into three after the threat of Tropical Storm Isaac forced the soon-to-be nominee to cut short his national convention.

Officials say they hope to begin laying out a revised schedule on Sunday.

As aides in Tampa scramble, Romney is taking a rare day off the campaign trail at his lakeside vacation home in New Hampshire, receiving updates on the storm and making final preparations for the Thursday speech with which he will accept his party's presidential nomination.

"The safety of those in Isaac's path is of the utmost importance," Romney tweeted after Republican officials announced they had called off Monday's convention proceedings.

Because of possible storm surges and flooding Isaac could bring, convention organizers said they were making contingency plans to move delegates who have been booked into beachfront hotels to other locations if necessary. They indicated the schedule shift also was meant to prevent overburdening emergency response personnel at the height of the storm.

The GOP made the announcement late Saturday, saying that while the convention would officially be gaveled into session on Monday as scheduled, events would be postponed until Tuesday.

With Isaac boring down on the coast, President Barack Obama, who was spending the weekend at the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland, dispatched the Federal Emergency Management Agency to establish a command center and move more resources into the state. Vice President Joe Biden scrapped a planned campaign trip into Florida that was to counter the start of the GOP convention.

Republicans hope to use this week's convention to cast Romney as a determined leader with the know-how to fix the country's economy. They also want to introduce him as a family oriented figure to counter the image of him as a ruthless businessman as Democrats have sought to brand him.

Romney and his wife, Ann, looked to show off the more personal side with a joint interview airing Sunday.

"I wish everyone could see him how I see him, because as a mother, I've seen him, how compassionate he's been with me, as a wife and my raising these small children and how he always valued my work as being more important than his," Ann Romney said in the "Fox News Sunday" interview taped at the family's summer home in New Hampshire.

The candidate described his wife as his "best friend, obviously, and my counselor throughout my life," according to an advance transcript.

While the Romneys reveled in their convention, Obama was due to travel next week to college towns in Iowa, Colorado and Virginia to court young voters and college students. The president's nomination for a desired second term was to come a week later in Charlotte, N.C., during a Democratic convention beginning Sept. 4, right on the heels of the Republican convention.

In an interview with The Associated Press published Saturday, Obama sought to portray Romney as someone beholden to "extreme positions" on economic and social issues. Obama took pains to paint Romney and his running mate, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, as ideologues at a time when voters seem frustrated by government gridlock.

After a near-constant travel schedule since he was announced as the GOP vice presidential candidate, Ryan was also taking a rare break. Following a Saturday evening fundraiser in Manchester, N.H., he returned home to Janesville, Wis. Aides said Ryan planned a quiet Sunday. Then, before flying to Florida, he was to appear at a Monday rally in his hometown that was likely to offer him a hero's sendoff.

A few of Romney's former presidential rivals were holding events of their own in Tampa. Herman Cain and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann ? both have endorsed Romney ? were appearing at a joint event. Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who hasn't conferred his blessing on the presumptive nominee, was anticipating thousands at a University of South Florida rally.

Apple-Samsung Patent Lawsuit: Samsung Ordered To Pay Apple $1.05 Billion

SAN JOSE, Calif. ? After a year of scorched-earth litigation, a jury decided Friday that Samsung ripped off the innovative technology used by Apple to create its revolutionary iPhone and iPad.

The jury ordered Samsung to pay Apple $1.05 billion in the latest skirmish of a global legal battle between the two tech giants. An appeal is expected.

Apple Inc. filed its patent infringement lawsuit in April 2011 and engaged legions of the country's highest-paid patent lawyers to demand $2.5 billion from its top smartphone competitor. Samsung Electronics Co. fired back with its own lawsuit seeking $399 million.

The verdict, however, belonged exclusively to Apple, as the jury rejected all Samsung's claims against Apple. Jurors also decided against some of Apple's claims involving the two dozen Samsung devices at issue, declining to award the full $2.5 billion Apple demanded.

However, the jury found that several Samsung products illegally used such Apple creations as the "bounce-back" feature when a user scrolls to an end image, and the ability to zoom text with a tap of a finger.

Apple lawyer plans to formally demand Samsung pull its most popular cellphones and computer tablets from the U.S. market. They also can ask the judge to triple the damages to $3 billion. U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh will decide those issues along with Samsung's demand she overturn the jury's verdict in several weeks.

The outcome of the case is likely to have ripple effects in the smartphone market. After seeing Samsung's legal defeat, other device makers relying on Android may become more reluctant to use the software and risk getting dragged into court.

"Some of these device makers might end up saying, `We love Android, but we really don't want to fight with Apple anymore," said Christopher Marlett, CEO of MDB Capital Group, an investment bank specializing in intellectual property.

ISI Group analyst also viewed the verdict as a blow to Android, as much as Samsung.

During closing arguments at the trial, Apple attorney Harold McElhinny claimed Samsung was having a "crisis of design" after the 2007 launch of the iPhone, and executives with the South Korean company were determined to illegally cash in on the success of the revolutionary device.

Samsung's lawyers countered that it was legally giving consumers what they want: smartphones with big screens. They said Samsung didn't violate any of Apple's patents and further alleged innovations claimed by Apple were actually created by other companies.

Samsung, headquartered in Seoul, responded to the verdict, saying in a statement it was "unfortunate that patent law can be manipulated to give one company a monopoly over rectangles with rounded corners."

"Today's verdict should not be viewed as a win for Apple, but as a loss for the American consumer. It will lead to fewer choices, less innovation, and potentially higher prices," Samsung said.

The jurors' determination that Samsung took Apple's ideas probably matters more to the companies than the damages figures, Marlett said.

"I don't know if $1 billion is hugely significant to Apple or Samsung," Marlett said. "But there is a social cost here. As a company, you don't want to be known as someone who steals from someone else. I am sure Samsung wants to be known as an innovator, especially since a lot of Asian companies have become known for copying the designs of innovators."

Samsung has emerged as one of Apple's biggest rivals and has overtaken as the leading smartphone maker. Samsung's Galaxy line of phones run on Android, a mobile operating system that Google Inc. has given out for free to Samsung and other phone makers.

Google entered the smartphone market while its then-CEO Eric Schmidt was on Apple's board, infuriating Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who considered Android to be a blatant rip off of the iPhone's innovations.

After shoving Schmidt off Apple's board, Jobs vowed that Apple would resort to "thermonuclear war" to destroy Android and its allies.

If Android lose any ground in the mobile computing market, that would hurt Google, too. That's because Google relies on Android to drive mobile traffic to its search engine and services to sell more advertising.

The Apple-Samsung trial came after each side filed a blizzard of legal motions and refused advisories by the judge to settle the dispute out of court. Deliberations by the jury of seven men and two women began Wednesday.

Jurors left the courthouse without addressing the scrum of international media who camped out at the San Jose courthouse for a month.

They notified the judge at about 2:30 p.m. that they had arrived at a verdict after deliberating two-and-a-half days. Many expected deliberations to last longer because of the complexity of the case.

Jurors filed into the courtroom silently Friday, the youngest juror who favored flipflops, shorts and playing videogames was wearing a Beatles sweatshirt and handed over the 20-page verdict form with little fanfare.

Apple and Samsung combined account for more than half of global smartphone sales. Samsung has sold 22.7 million smartphones and tablets that Apple claimed uses its technology. McElhinny said those devices accounted for $8.16 billion in sales since June 2010.

From the beginning, legal experts and Wall Street analysts viewed Samsung as the underdog. Apple's headquarters is a mere 10 miles from the San Jose courthouse, and jurors were picked from the heart of Silicon Valley where Jobs is a revered technological pioneer.

While the legal and technological issues were complex, patent expert Alexander I. Poltorak previously said the case would likely boil down to whether jurors believed Samsung's products look and feel almost identical to Apple's iPhone and iPad.

To overcome that challenge at trial, Samsung's lawyers argued that many of Apple's claims of innovation were either obvious concepts or ideas stolen from Sony Corp. and others. Experts called that line of argument a high-risk strategy because of Apple's reputation as an innovator.

Apple's lawyers argued there is almost no difference between Samsung products and those of Apple, and presented internal Samsung documents they said showed it copied Apple designs. Samsung lawyers insisted that several other companies and inventors had previously developed much of the Apple technology at issue.

Apple and Samsung have filed similar lawsuits in eight other countries, including South Korea, Germany, Japan, Italy, the Netherlands, Britain, France and Australia.

"This is not the final word in this case or in battles being waged in courts and tribunals around the world, some of which have already rejected many of Apple's claims," Samsung said in its statement.

Samsung won a home court ruling earlier Friday in the global patent battle against Apple. Judges in Seoul said Samsung didn't copy the look and feel of the iPhone and ruled that Apple infringed on Samsung's wireless technology.

However, the judges also said Samsung violated Apple's technology behind the feature that causes a screen to bounce back when a user scrolls to an end image. Both sides were ordered to pay limited damages.

The Seoul ruling was a rare victory for Samsung in its arguments that Apple has infringed on its wireless technology patents. Samsung's claims have previously been shot down by courts in Europe, where judges have ruled that Samsung patents were part of industry standards that must be licensed under fair terms to competitors.

The U.S. case is one of some 50 lawsuits among myriad telecommunications companies jockeying for position in the burgeoning $219 billion market for computer tablets and smartphones.

Miguel Cabrera and Albert Pujols sit with injuries

DETROIT (AP) ? The Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Angels each sat a star in the hopes of keeping them healthy for rest of the season.

Miguel Cabrera and Albert Pujols were not in the lineup because of injuries Sunday in the Angels-Tigers series finale, giving them two days off because both teams are off Monday.

Cabrera played in Detroit's first 126 games this season. The third baseman has a sore right ankle that limited him to being a designated hitter on Friday and Saturday.

"What's best for Miguel is best for the Tigers," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said.

Pujols hasn't played since Wednesday when he left a game against Boston in the fourth inning with tightness in his right calf.

"I'm feeling better," he said. "But they want to give me another day off ? whatever they want to do."

The Tigers and Angels are both potentially vying for an AL wild card with 30-plus games left in the regular season. They need Cabrera and Pujols to avoid going from having day-to-day soreness to a long-term injury.

Cabrera ranks among the AL's best with a .324 batting average, 32 homers and 106 RBIs. Pujols is hitting .283 and has 28 homers and 86 RBIs.

"When Albert is ready to play, he's going to play," Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia said. "We're not holding him out to get him ready for the stretch. If he was available and could play, he would be playing."

Govt hopes R. Kennedy Foundation will be ... - Morocco World News

Rabat, August 26, 2012 (MAP)

The Moroccan government hopes that Robert Kennedy Foundation for Justice and Human Rights, whose members are carrying out a visit to the southern provinces, develops ?an objective and impartial vision? of the human rights situation in the region and in the Tindouf camps (Algeria?s south-west) where they will go in the future.

?We expect international organizations, whether Robert Kennedy Foundation or others, to develop an objective, impartial and real vision for both the southern provinces of the Kingdom and the Tindouf camps, for a lasting and definitive political solution to this artificial conflict? over the Moroccan Sahara, Communication Minister, Government Spokesman, Mustapha El Khalfi, told MAP news agency.

The visit of the delegation, which began Friday in Laayoune, takes place ?under normal conditions,? he said, refuting unfounded allegations that the tour is subject to a ?security blockade.?

Morocco, he said, presented in 2007 an autonomy initiative for the Sahara within the framework of national sovereignty, and undertake a series of constructive measures, including the establishment of mechanisms for regional structuring of the National Human Rights Council, including the southern provinces, and the positive cooperation with the Human Rights Council in Geneva last May, in the second cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (UPC-2012/2106), under which Morocco has accepted 140 recommendations out of a total of 148, which was well received on the international scene.

El Khalfi focused on the national effort provided in order to ?overcome problems that may arise? in this field, through a participatory approach with human rights organizations.

The door of the Ministry of Justice and Freedom is ?open? to discuss any matter relating to human rights in Morocco, he stressed, noting that the Constitution opens the field to the adaptation of the national legislation in the field with the international commitments of the Kingdom.

Self Improvement | Relationship Advice for Women About Men and ...

By Ken Solin -

One of the lessons I?ve learned over twenty years working with men is that frequently, the best way to reach men, is through women. I?ll fore-go the reasons for that and concentrate on results. In the interest of helping women to help men in relationships, I offer what I?ve learned about men?s relationship behavior. I have had great success helping men learn how to access their feelings, and then control them.

Perhaps the single biggest problem that women frequently ask me is why men aren?t better communicators, specifically, why men can?t talk about their feelings.

The good news is that men are eminently capable of sharing their feelings. The not-so-bad news is that it?s going to take some amount of working with your guy to achieve this. While I understand why women might feel put-upon, in terms of feeling obligated to accept responsibility for helping men learn this skill, I can assure women that the results will level the playing field that is your relationship. If emotional dialogue is what?s missing in your relationship, then helping your guy in order to achieve it seems worthwhile.

If you choose to move on instead, you?ll likely find yourself in the same position in your next relationship because most men suffer from the same dysfunction.

If you?re still reading, here?s the first exercise to do with your guy. The single most important piece of the puzzle for a man to share his feelings is that he must feel absolutely, 100% safe. That means that you have to tell him that whatever he shares, you won?t judge it, express an opinion about it, or offer him advice.

The reason for this disclaimer is that his feelings, just like yours, are his absolute truth and therefore are immune from comment other than a thank you for sharing. When a man expresses his thoughts, he is open to judgment and advice, because thoughts are just opinions, and are debatable.

I can assure you that the first time a man expresses his feelings, and you express anything other than your thanks will be the last time he ever gets into that arena with you, because he will know that sharing his emotions with you is not safe.

Incidentally, this is true for anyone expressing feelings. At the first sign of judgment or advice, whoever shared his or her feelings with you will put you on their no fly list, permanently. This is entirely about trust, and absent trust, there can?t be any love.

Okay, you explained the ground rules to him and now he feels more relaxed about opening his heart. The next step is to be patient. It may take a few tries before what he talks about are his feelings, and not his thoughts. Gently steer him back to his feelings if he wanders off into his thoughts. In this scenario, patience is a virtue.

Wait until he?s finished talking before thanking him and asking any questions. He may pause but not be finished with sharing his feelings.

Congratulate him, and yourself, for successfully engaging in your first of many emotional dialogues to come. Hopefully he will respond positively so the next time there?s a problem in your relationship you?ll be able to talk it out with him, on an emotional basis.

For twenty years, author and lecturer Ken Solin has helped men move beyond the issues that limit their lives. Both men and women follow Ken since his work is primarily about relationships.

Ken?s website, http://www.kensolin.com/ is filled blogs about real life problems.

Most mutations come from dad: New insights into age, height and sex reshape views of human evolution

ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2012) ? Humans inherit more than three times as many mutations from their fathers as from their mothers, and mutation rates increase with the father's age but not the mother's, researchers have found in the largest study of human genetic mutations to date.

The study, based on the DNA of around 85,000 Icelanders, also calculates the rate of human mutation at high resolution, providing estimates of when human ancestors diverged from nonhuman primates. It is one of two papers published this week by the journal Nature Genetics as well as one published at Nature that shed dramatic new light on human evolution.

"Most mutations come from dad," said David Reich, professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School and a co-leader of the study. In addition to finding 3.3 paternal germline mutations for each maternal mutation, the study also found that the mutation rate in fathers doubles from age 20 to 58 but that there is no association with age in mothers -- a finding that may shed light on conditions, such as autism, that correlate with the father's age.

The study's first author is James Sun, a graduate student in Reich's lab who worked with researchers from deCODE Genetics, a biopharma company based in Reykjavik, Iceland, to analyze about 2,500 short sequences of DNA taken from 85,289 Icelanders in 24,832 father-mother-child trios. The sequences, called microsatellites, vary in the number of times that they repeat, and are known to mutate at a higher rate than average places in the genome.

Reich's team identified 2,058 mutational changes, yielding a rate of mutation that suggests human and chimpanzee ancestral populations diverged between 3.7 million and 6.6 million years ago.

A second team, also based at deCODE Genetics (but not involving HMS researchers), published a paper this week in Nature on a large-scale direct estimate of the rate of single nucleotide substitutions in human genomes (a different type of mutation process), and came to largely consistent findings.

The finding complicates theories drawn from the fossil evidence. The upper bound, 6.6 million years, is less than the published date of Sahelanthropus tchadensis, a fossil that has been interpreted to be a human ancestor since the separation of chimpanzees, but is dated to around 7 million years old. The new study suggests that this fossil may be incorrectly interpreted.

Great Heights

A second study led by HMS researchers, also published in Nature Genetics this week, adds to the picture of human evolution, describing a newly observable form of recent genetic adaptation.

The team led by Joel Hirschhorn, Concordia Professor of Pediatrics and professor of genetics at Boston Children's Hospital and HMS, first asked why closely-related populations can have noticeably different average heights. David Reich also contributed to this study.

They examined genome-wide association data and found that average differences in height across Europe are partly due to genetic factors. They then showed that these genetic differences are the result of an evolutionary process that acts on variation in many genes at once. This type of evolution had been proposed to exist but had not previously been detected in humans.

Although recent human evolution is difficult to observe directly, some of its impact can be inferred by studying the human genome. In recent years, genetic studies have uncovered many examples where recent evolution has left a distinctive signature on the human genome. The clearest "footprints" of evolution have been seen in regions of DNA surrounding mutations that occurred fairly recently (typically in the last several thousand years) and confer an advantageous trait, such as resistance to malaria. Hirschhorn's team observed, for the first time in humans, a different signature of recent evolution: widespread small but consistent changes at many different places in the genome, all affecting the same trait, adult height.

"This paper offers the first proof and clear example of a new kind of human evolution for a specific trait," said Hirschhorn, who is also a senior associate member of the Broad Institute. "We provide a demonstration of how humans have been able to adapt rapidly without needing to wait for new mutations to happen, by drawing instead on the existing genetic diversity within the human population."

Average heights can differ between populations, even populations that are genetically very similar, which suggests that human height might have been evolving differently across these populations. Hirschhorn's team studied variants in the genome that are known to have small but consistent effects on height: people inheriting the "tall" version of these variants are known to be slightly taller on average than people inheriting the "short" versions of the same variants.

The researchers discovered that, in northern Europe, the "tall" versions of these variants are consistently a little more common than they are in southern Europe. The combined effects of the "tall" versions being more common can partly explain why northern Europeans are on average taller than southern Europeans. The researchers then showed that these slight differences have arisen as a result of evolution acting at many variants, and acting differently in northern than in southern Europe.

"This paper explains -- at least in part -- why some European populations, such as people from Sweden, are taller on average than others, such as people from Italy," Hirschhorn said.

The researchers were only able to detect this signature of evolution by using the results of recent genome-wide association studies by the GIANT consortium, which identified hundreds of different genetic variants that influence height.

Apple, Samsung respond to the jury's decision; September 20th court date set for injunction hearing

Apple, Samsung respond to the jury's decision September 20th court date set for injunction hearing

Well. The verdict for the tech industry patent trial of the week is in, and the jury agreed with Apple's version of the events enough to award it a billion dollars and change in damages while awarding Samsung... nothing. Naturally, the two companies differ in their viewpoints on this ruling, with Apple celebrating a decision that supports its originality and innovation, and is "sending a loud and clear message that stealing isn't right." Samsung, on the other hand, claims it's all about standing up for the consumer, who it believes will be the true victim here, forced to pay more for fewer choices and less innovation now that one company has "a monopoly over rectangles with rounded corners."

Before we get to the inevitable appeals, Apple is seeking a preliminary injunction against Samsung's infringing products and Judge Lucy Koh has set September 20th as a date for the hearing. Apple has until the 29th to file its motion, which Samsung will have 14 days to respond to, before Apple has two days to craft a response of its own. While we all take a breather before the lawyers get back at it, you'll find the statements from both companies after the break.

Update: As expected, Samsung has indicated it will appeal the ruling. Wall Street Journal's Evan Ramstad tweets that it plans to file post-verdict motions to overturn the decision and if those are unsuccessful, it will take its case to the Appeals Court.

Jordan pulls 3 squad members out of Paralympics

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) ? Jordan pulled three squad members accused of sexual assault in Northern Ireland out of the 2012 London Paralympics on Thursday, sports officials in Amman said.

The Jordanian Paralympic Committee said the three men ? two Paralympic power-lifters and a trainer ? will be flown home later on Thursday but that they will be returned to court in Northern Ireland on Oct. 18 for their hearing.

The three were arrested on Monday northwest of Belfast where Jordan's squad is one of several national teams training before the Paralympics, which begin Aug. 29. The men were released on bail Wednesday.

The committee said in a written statement to The Associated Press that it decided to pull the three out of the games because it "would be inappropriate for the accused athletes to compete" in the international tournament.

"We have zero tolerance on any misconduct and will continue to work closely with the Northern Ireland authorities to assist in their investigation," said the statement. The wording reflected the embarrassment of the government, which is seeking to place Jordan on the world's sports map.

"However, our focus is now preparing the remaining members of the team for competition and we look forward to taking part in what promises to be a truly magnificent sporting event," it added.

In Northern Ireland, police said a 14-year-old girl claimed that she posed for photographs with Omar Sami Qaradhi, 31, before he groped her between the legs in the town center of Antrim on Aug. 18.

That same day, a 16-year-old girl said she and a friend were walking along the river near the sports center where the men were training when they blocked their path. Police allege that one of the men pushed the girl towards Qaradhi, who wrapped his arm around her waist and tightened his grip before she ran away.

Qaradhi is facing three charges of sexual assault, two of which are against a child. He also is charged with one count of voyeurism after allegedly entering a women's changing room at the local sports center.

The two other men were identified as Motaz Al Junaidi, 45, and trainer Faisal Hammash, 35, who also appeared at Coleraine Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.
