Michael Moran was one of two appointments announced by Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper in filling the last public trustee posts in 10 counties.

Hickenlooper asked all 10 trustees to resign after media reports detailed some of their spending practices and, in the case of former Mesa County Public Trustee Paul Brown, a dispute over publishing foreclosure notices.

Moran is an attorney with the Grand Junction law firm of Chris Mahre & Associates.

Brown said he made the changes in part because of errors in notices that appeared in the Sentinel and the willingness of the weekly newspapers to publish electronically scanned notices. It was subsequently reported, though, that Brown signed a contract to publish the notices in the weekly newspapers a month before opening the process to competitive bidding.

The search for a vaccine against AIDS has been long and fruitless ? mostly because the virus mutates so fast.

As is well known, flu vaccines have to be reformulated every year because influenza viruses mutate so steadily. But the human immunodeficiency virus, which causes AIDS, mutates as much in a single day as flu virus does in a year, presenting scientists with an almost insurmountable challenge.

This month, South African researchers announced that they had found a vulnerable spot on the virus?s outer shell that might present a good vaccine target, and that they had also learned, for the first time, at what stage of an infection it develops. They found only two women whose virus had the vulnerability ? and it wasn?t the same virus that first infected them, but a mutant that developed a few months later.

The research, published by Nature Medicine on Oct. 21, was praised as ?very interesting? by several AIDS experts.

?It?s a combination of good science and ?Boy, did we get lucky,??? said Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. ?They had all these blood samples and virus samples.?

The researchers, led by Dr. Salim Abdool Karim, president of South Africa?s Medical Research Council and best known for pioneering work on vaginal microbicides, screened hundreds of blood samples given at regular intervals by 79 women who had been in earlier clinical trials at his Durban clinic and had become infected during the trials.

?What we have that?s unique,? Dr. Karim said, ?is that for the first time, we understand how a person can make broadly neutralizing antibodies.?

The virus?s vulnerable spot ? open to antibody attack ? was created when a sugarlike surface compound called a glycan shifted positions.

Antibodies are Y-shaped proteins produced by the immune system that attach to a virus and block its outer receptors ? sort of the way sweater fuzz attaches to Velcro and renders it unsticky.

There are many strains of H.I.V., and no known antibody incapacitates all of them. But in the last few years, several teams of scientists have isolated about a dozen that each can shut down up to 80 percent of all virus strains. These are said to be ?broadly neutralizing.?

Less than 20 percent of all patients naturally develop such antibodies in their blood, and even those who do aren?t fully protected. One of the women whose blood was crucial to Dr. Karim?s study has died of AIDS-related tuberculosis, and the other is on antiretroviral drugs.

Nonetheless, experts hope it will eventually be possible to manufacture cocktails with large doses of several kinds of antibodies to treat patients ? or even to induce the immune system to make those particular antibodies, which would amount to a vaccine.

But that will take more work, and more luck.

Dr. John P. Moore, an AIDS researcher at Weill Cornell Medical School, called the South African paper ?good solid science, but not enough to know if you have the right target.?

?It?s like looking at a castle and saying: ?I can see a weak point, but I don?t know what kind of battering ram to get,??? he added.

Normally, H.I.V. repels antibodies by mutating its Velcro hooks into different shapes. But some spots on the viral shell don?t change shape easily. Scientists from the National Institute for Communicable Diseases in South Africa and universities in KwaZulu/Natal, Cape Town and North Carolina, as well as from Harvard, screened multiple blood samples looking for previously known antibodies. They found them in the two women, and noted how long into their infections those antibodies appeared ? around six months, it turned out, after their infections were first detected.

Then the scientists looked to see what exactly had changed in the virus circulating in their blood at that time.

They found that a sugarlike glycan had moved from Position 334 to Position 332 on one of the lumpy spikes that stud the virus. That tiny change allows the antibody to attach and alert the body that the whole round virus is an invader, Dr. Karim said.

Antibodies neutralize viruses by blocking their receptors and by attracting white blood cells that will engulf the virus.

Most of the work was done by South Africans and paid for by the South African government, Dr. Karim said proudly, although additional money came from the United States National Institutes of Health and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Dr. Karim, who also teaches at Columbia University in New York, particularly praised one local researcher, Penny L. Moore of the National Health Laboratory Service in Johannesburg.

?She?s one of our up-and-coming stars,? he said. ?Old fogies like myself are quickly becoming redundant.?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Superstorm Sandy will end up causing about $20 billion in property damages and $10 billion to $30 billion more in lost business, according to IHS Global Insight, a forecasting firm.

In the long run, the devastation the storm inflicted on New York City and other parts of the Northeast will barely nick the U.S. economy. That's the view of economists who say a slightly slower economy in coming weeks will likely be matched by reconstruction and repairs that will contribute to growth over time.

The short-term blow to the economy, though, could subtract about 0.6 percentage point from U.S. economic growth in the October-December quarter, IHS says. Retailers, airlines and home construction firms will likely lose some business.

The storm cut power to more than 8 million homes, shut down 70 percent of East Coast oil refineries and inflicted worse-than-expected damage in the New York metro area. That area produces about 10 percent of U.S. economic output.

New York City was all but closed off by car, train and air. The superstorm overflowed the city's waterfront, flooded the financial district and subway tunnels and cut power to hundreds of thousands. Power is expected to be fully restored in Manhattan and Brooklyn within four days.

The New York Stock Exchange will reopen for regular trading Wednesday after being shut down for two days. There's no evidence that the shutdown had any effect on the financial system or the economy. But Jim Paulsen, chief strategist at Wells Capital Management, said further delays might have rattled consumers and dampened their spending.

"It's about confidence," Paulsen said. "We're watching these horrific images of the storm, and people are thinking whether they should ahead with that big purchase ....It doesn't do any good to have another day with headlines saying the U.S can't figure out how to open its stock exchange."

Most homeowners who suffered losses from flooding won't be able to benefit from their insurance policies. Standard homeowner policies don't cover flood damage, and few homeowners have flood insurance.

But Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac said they will offer help to borrowers whose homes were damaged or destroyed, who live in designated disaster areas and whose loans the mortgage giants own or guarantee. Among other steps, mortgage servicers will be allowed to reduce the monthly payments of affected homeowners or require no payments from them temporarily.

Across U.S. industries, disruptions will slow the economy temporarily. Some restaurants and stores will draw fewer customers. Factories may shut down or shorten shifts because of a drop in customer demand.

Some of those losses won't be easily made up. Restaurants that lose two or three days of business, for example, won't necessarily experience a rebound later. And money spent to repair a home may lead to less spending elsewhere.

With some roads in the Northeast impassable after the storm, drivers won't be filling up as much. That will slow demand for gasoline. Pump prices, which had been declining before the storm, will likely keep slipping. The national average for a gallon of regular fell by about a penny Tuesday, to $3.53 ? more than 11 cents lower than a week ago.

Shipping and business travel has been suspended in areas of the Northeast. More than 15,000 flights across the Northeast and the world have been grounded, and it will take days for some passengers to get where they're going.

On Tuesday, more than 6,000 flights were canceled, according to the flight-tracking service FlightAware. More than 500 flights scheduled for Wednesday were also canceled.

The three big New York airports were closed Tuesday. New York has the nation's busiest airspace, so cancellations there drastically affect travel in other cities.

Economists noted that the short-term hit to the economy was worsened by the size of the population centers the storm hit.

"Sandy hit a high-population-density area with a lot of expensive homes," said Beata Caranci, deputy chief economist at TD Bank.

Hurricane damage to homes, businesses and roads reduces U.S. wealth. But it doesn't subtract from the government's calculation of economic activity.

By contrast, rebuilding and restocking by businesses and consumers add to the nation's gross domestic product ? the broadest gauge of economic production. GDP measures all goods and services produced in the United States.

Paul Ashworth, chief U.S. economist at Capital Economics, expects the storm to shave 0.1 to 0.2 percentage point from annual economic growth in the October-December quarter. He thinks the economy will grow at an annual rate of 1.5 percent to 2 percent in the fourth quarter. It grew at a 2 percent annual rate last quarter.

But Ashworth said any losses this quarter should be made up later as rebuilding boosts sales at building supply stores and other companies.

"People will load up on whatever they need to make repairs ? roofing, dry wall, carpeting ? to deal with the damage," he said.

In the short run, Caranci said the economic damage could be worst for small businesses that lack the money and other resources to withstand lost sales.

"It will remain to be seen how long disruptions to electricity and infrastructure persist," she said.

But she noted that the storm should help the construction industry, which shed millions of workers after the housing bust. Many who lost construction jobs were skilled employees with disproportionately high pay, and the loss of those jobs hit the economy hard.

Major retailers began trying Tuesday to ramp up their operations before the critical holiday shopping period.

Sears Holdings Corp., which operates Kmart and Sears, said 80 of its stores were still closed at midday Tuesday, down from 187 Monday. Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's biggest retailer, said it was working to reopen the 168 stores it closed. And Darden Restaurants Inc., parent of Olive Garden and Red Lobster, by Tuesday afternoon had reopened roughly 160 of the 260 restaurants it closed Monday.

Retailers collect up to 40 percent of their annual revenue in November and December. Retailers, excluding restaurants, could lose at least $25 billion in sales this week, estimates Burt Flickinger III of retail consultancy Strategic Resource Group. Because of the storm, he's reduced his forecast for holiday sales to a 2.1 percent increase over last year from the 3.2 percent increase he had predicted earlier.

Reopening is often difficult after a storm. Because New York's subways and buses remained closed Tuesday, it was hard for many employees to get to work. Macy's and Saks Fifth Avenue flagship stores stayed closed Tuesday ? bad news for those retailers, because major department stores can derive 10 percent of annual sales from their Manhattan locations.

Still, those stores that could open for business did. A Westside Market in Manhattan remained open 24 hours a day throughout the storm, even though only about 20 percent of workers managed to show up Monday and Tuesday.

"They found a way to get here ? I don't know how," store manager Jay Bilone said.

Insured losses from the superstorm will likely total $5 billion to $10 billion, the forecasting firm Eqecat estimates. Insurance losses are typically a fraction of the overall cost.

Chubb, Allstate and Travelers are the insurers most likely to suffer losses, said Greg Locraft, an analyst at Morgan Stanley. Those companies claim a major share of the affected areas.

But "as an insurance event, Sandy is going to be a blip on the balance sheet," said Duncan Ellis, U.S. property practice leader at Marsh, the insurance broker. "2012 has been a relatively catastrophe-free year."

Economists expect actual property damages from Hurricane Sandy to exceed those caused last year by Hurricane Irene, which cost $15.8 billion. Irene had little effect on the nation's growth.

Sandy will likely be among the 10 costliest hurricanes in U.S. history. It would still be far below the worst ? Hurricane Katrina, which cost $108 billion in 2005.

But "there is every reason to believe that the hurricane won't kick the legs out of an already-fragile U.S. economy," Caranci said.

Album Review: The Wilderness of Manitoba, Island of Echoes

With their debut album, When You Left the Fire, The Wilderness of Manitoba had established a distinct sound that warmed our hearts and ears. Their rich harmonies carried their autumnal folk melodies from one song to the other with an effortlessness that eases through like a sip of tea on a colourful fall afternoon.

Fear not, that same essence is still present on the Toronto band's latest release, Island of Echoes, but as with seasons, we're seeing and hearing the band transition into something different.

The band itself was in flux in the past year as band member Melissa Dalton decided to leave after the extensive touring took a toll on her. That alone threw a wrench into the works, but the remaining four members continued on, eliciting guest vocals from local songstresses Elise Legrow and Felicity Williams.

They were particularly struck by their musical connection with violinist Amanda Balsys of The Gertrudes, though, and upon working with her, decided to invite her into the band as a full-time member. Multi-instrumentalist and singer Will Whitham described her voice in a recent interview as "kind of like a mom's in the 70s. You know, a Linda Ronstadt kind of tone. A very strong alto sound."

Sonically, The Wilderness of Manitoba continue their signature sound of intimate harmonies and campfire folk tunes, but now infused with even more elements. More prominent guitars subtly lie atop tracks like "Echoes" whereas drums come tumbling through "The Island of the Day Before."

There's also an urgency on this album, as if the band is hurdling towards the next step with speed and determination. This isn't a slight, though, as these speedier tracks serve their harmonies just as well as it did before. The banjo on "White Woods" drives the track forward as the band's harmonies keep up with the pace; together, creating almost a new signature sound that threads the album together.

This is a band in transition, but if its destination is as lush and beautiful as its transformation, then we're dying with anticipation to hear the next album and what they will sound like. Crank up Island of Echoes, grab that cup of tea and enjoy the fall leaves now before Mother Nature dumps the snow on us.

Gene linked to inflammation in the aorta may contribute to abdominal aortic aneurysm

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? A gene known to be involved in cancer and cardiovascular development may be the cause of inflammation in the most common form of aortic aneurysm and may be a key to treatment, according to research from Nationwide Children's Hospital. The study, appearing online in Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology on October 18, 2012, is the first to show that Notch 1 signaling is activated in abdominal aortic aneurysmal tissue in mice and humans.

The aorta is the largest blood vessel in the body. Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) occurs when the weakened aortic wall dilates in the abdominal portion of the vessel; they are the most common form of aortic aneurysms. AAA is a leading cause of death in the United States, especially among men over the age 65, and the disease is linked to smoking, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. AAA is extremely rare in children, but can occur in those who experience a blunt trauma or who have connective tissue diseases. Surgery is currently the only treatment for AAA and less than 20 percent of patients will survive a ruptured aneurysm.

"There is critical need to develop pharmacologic interventions that can selectively target one or more features of AAA to prevent the progression or stimulate regression in already diagnosed patients," says the study's senior author, Vidu Garg, MD a cardiologist in The Heart Center at Nationwide Children's Hospital and a principal investigator in the Center for Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Research.

Inflammation is a hallmark of AAA. The Notch 1 gene is involved in many developmental processes in humans and studies have shown its signaling pathway to be active in several inflammatory diseases.

"Notch 1 signaling is a significant regulator of the inflammatory response," says the study's lead author, Chetan Hans, PhD, principal investigator in the Center for Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Research at Nationwide Children's Hospital. "However, its role in AAA is unknown."

To examine the role of Notch 1 signaling in AAA development, Dr. Hans and colleagues first inspected tissue specimens from the abdominal aorta of patients undergoing AAA repair and a mouse model of the disease. They provide the first evidence that Notch 1 signaling is activated in these models and in human patients. They then closely examined the role Notch 1 signaling plays in the Angiotensin II-induced mouse model of AAA, when Notch 1 signaling is inhibited.

Findings showed that mice that had a genetic deficiency of Notch1 or received a chemical Notch inhibitor had less inflammation in the aorta and had a reduced incidence of AAA.

"Our data suggest that Notch 1 is an important player in the inflammatory process in the setting of AAA," says Dr. Hans. "Treatment with Notch 1-specific inhibitors may be a potentially promising strategy for slowing aneurysm development."

Ellen DeGeneres Receives Mark Twain Prize for American Humor

Ellen DeGeneres took the stage at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and shared the evening with her friends and colleagues as she was honored for being funny. The comedian and talk show host was the 15th recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor on Monday night. Honoring the Hollywood-based comedian for her efforts in the field of comedy, the entertainer was recognized for her funny bone.

Stars from all walks of life came to honor the comedian with plenty of comedians. Jimmy Kimmel, Jane Lynch, and even Steve Harvey said kind words about the entertainer. When DeGeneres picked up her award, she joked that the reason she took interest in comedy wasn't for awards, but for the money. Of course, the entertainer was kidding, but the crowd already knew her heart was in the right place as she has made millions of fans laugh and giggle without money or fame.

Ellen DeGeneres is known for her kind heart, funny dances, and plenty of jokes. The entertainer is never at a loss for humor, even when the going got tough. Today, with a leading daytime talk show, her influence in American culture is stronger than ever.

Graduate Design/Build Studio recognized for solar-powered gardening classroom

Summer time is work time for the University of Houston's Graduate Design/Build Studio (UH GDBS). Each year, the studio's students brave Houston's heat to help enhance the city's landscape.

By designing and constructing useful community amenities, UH GDBS has helped local schools, parks, and nonprofit organizations. This year was no different as the studio produced a solar-powered outdoor classroom/butterfly pavilion for Alief's community garden.

Their hard work received a "green" thumbs up from the community and soon will be presented with the Mayor's Proud Partner Award by Keep Houston Beautiful. The award honors projects that enhance and beautify the city. UH architecture professor Patrick Peters and GDBS students will accept the award during the 28th annual Mayor's Proud Partners Awards luncheon at noon; Oct. 28 at the Houston Hilton Post Oak Hotel.

This steel, shade structure will be welcomed to the community Nov. 10 during a ribbon-cutting event. With solar-powered ceiling fans, the pavilion will provide community members with a place to cool off, as well as a perfect space for educational demonstrations on planting, cooking, vegetables and other topics.

The garden and classroom site are located across the street from Youngblood Intermediate School (at Beechnut Street and Dairy View Lane) on property owned by Alief Independent School District. Once completed, the school can use the classroom for outdoor activities.

Houston's SPARK School Park Program funded the project with support from Alief Independent School District, Alief International District and Coca-Cola. Other collaborators include architect Christof Spieler and Tolunay-Wong Engineers Inc.

Another UH project received an honorable mention from Keep Houston Beautiful. A solar-powered outdoor demonstration kitchen that was designed by UH architecture and graphic communication students was recognized by this awards program.

Some Gods/Goddesses by nature are destructive and others protective over the land, so to avoid unnecessary conflict, users will stake a land claim as to discourage chaotic beings from blatantly destroying places of the Middle Realm and to establish a territory or "nation" for the growth of their creations. They will govern these territories.

As nations of mortals, the land claims may change over time with the coming of war and other events of influence.

As of today (22 October) Jon Wakefield walked through the glass doors at Volvo to take up his sales director appointment.

Jon, who was formerly the sales director at Fiat and Alfa Romeo, said:??Volvo has a strong product range which provides a great platform for future sales expansion. We have a strong dealer network and I look forward to working together with our dealers to reach new buyers.?

Selwyn Cooper and the corporate and business sales team, along with the?retail sales team,?will report into Jon, who in turn reports to Volvo boss Nick Connor.

Jon was appointed sales director at Fiat at the beginning of 2011, having previously?worked for the Mercedes-Benz division of Inchcape and as sales director at Daimler Chrysler Retail.

Newsweek is dead. The 80-year-old magazine will cease publication at the end of the year, a teary-eyed Tina Brown said last Thursday. Before we sink too deeply into grief, let's all remember what lies beyond these earthly, stapled pages. Newsweek may have passed away, its paper turned to dust, but the Newsweek spirit carries on, not as matter or material, but in a state of pure electron flux, a ghostly form that rides the WiFi waves around us. Its words will rise off the printing press and be transformed into an energy that's everywhere at once, but also nowhere. The magazine will become an online angel?a Web-based publication that penetrates our minds with truth and light. In death, it will be reborn and find everlasting life. ?

Sorry, I'm getting all mixed up. I've been having a little trouble focusing since I read Newsweek's cover story from Oct. 15?the one with a picture of a hand reaching up into the clouds and a headline promising that "Heaven Is Real." It's a personal account of meeting God, excerpted from a memoir published this week, called Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon's Journey Into the Afterlife. A neurosurgeon? More than that! The author, Eben Alexander III, makes a point of saying that he's a skeptic and a scientist, a skeptical scientist who happens to have spent some time (did he mention?) at a little school in Boston called Harvard University. This science-minded Harvard skeptic never thought he'd find the truth of Jesus Christ. But the facts are just the facts: Alexander has been graced with the divine, and he'll share that grace with us. He's become a neuro-prophet.

This experiment in out-of-body consciousness began in fall of 2008, when a case of bacterial meningitis put Alexander in a coma and "shut down" his ?entire cortex.? What he means by that is never clear?you might think this state would be synonymous with death, which is sort of what Alexander claims, even though he's now alive and writing books. But it's a waste of time to quibble over details, since according to the author, the fact of his brain's inactivation is the only thing that could possibly explain what happened next. While Alexander was in the coma, and his brain was ?totally off-line? he drifted from this world of Harvard neuroscience into a land of pink and puffy clouds, and chanting flocks of angels, and a glowing orb that speaks telepathically, and a blue-eyed lady-friend, and lots and lots of butterflies. You would not believe how many butterflies there are in Heaven.

"I've spent decades as a neurosurgeon at some of the most prestigious medical institutions in our country," Alexander writes, reminding us that he's no sap. "I sympathized deeply with those who wanted to believe that there was a God somewhere out there who loved us unconditionally. In fact, I envied such people the security that those beliefs no doubt provided. But as a scientist, I simply knew better than to believe them myself." He was just like you and me, you see, at least until he fell into a coma?and flew into the sky, and entered the mind of an earthworm, was forced to reconsider all his Harvard science skepticism about the loving Lord above.

Is it even worth rebutting this interpretation? Though it's not yet published, Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeons Journey Into the Afterlife has reached the Top 10 of the Amazon best-seller list, so we may as well prepare ourselves for the out-of-mind publicity that's sure to follow. For starters, Alexander says it took him "months to come to terms with what happened," as if he'd had to reconstruct the ultra-real experience after his recovery. One might timidly suggest that the story is confabulated?that is to say, his wounded brain filled in the gaps in time with a holy flight of fancy. (Perhaps his experience of "flying" came from memories of skydiving while a student at University of North Carolina?) It also seems at least half-plausible that Alexander's dreamy chit-chat with Jehovah happened in his head, as he was emerging from his coma, and during a time in which the author says he suffered from what's called "ICU psychosis." In the book?which I've had the great displeasure of perusing?he describes waking up to "a strange and exhausting paranoid universe" in which "Internet messages" showed up wherever he looked, and a "grinding, monotonous, anti-melodious chanting" filled his head. "Some of the dreams I had during this period were stunningly and frighteningly vivid," he says.

It was only later on that he worked out the fine points of his astral projection, in part by using a commercial meditation aid called "Hemi-Sync"?a $12 music CD that purports to mimic psychedelics and expand the mind with alternating beats. "Hemi-Sync potentially offered a means of inactivating the filtering function of the physical brain by globally synchronizing my neocortical electrical activity, just as my meningitis might have done, to liberate my out-of-body consciousness," he explains, as only a Harvard neurosurgeon can. Scientists who are a bit more skeptical have described these claims as silly.

Alexander claims to have been waffling on the matter of his faith before the meningitis. But the book reveals that he's always been a devout or at least a searching Christian. Long before he found himself in the "God-soaked and love-filled darkness" of his coma, Alexander took his family to church and made his children pray every night before they went to bed. His story of enlightenment is suffused with the most conventional evangelism: He was lost and now is found; he has "good news" to share with all. According to the memoir, Alexander was abandoned as a baby, spent Christmas as an orphan, and later on became a depressive alcoholic. Then he goes to a meeting in Jerusalem and finds the spot where Jesus ate his final meal, and while he's there (through some celestial stroke of luck), he contracts the deadly bug that will restore his faith and change his life and put him in a coma for a very biblical duration of seven days and seven nights.

Now, by grace of God, he's scheduled to appear on Nightline, Good Morning America, World News Tonight, and Fox & Friends. His book is almost guaranteed to be a huge success, a work of neuro-prophecy that hauls in massive neuro-profits. There's no doubt that Alexander's publisher is looking back with greedy eyes at another publishing sensation from three years ago, by the neuroanatomist Jill Bolte Taylor. That one, called My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist's Personal Journey, was also based on the rather dubious idea that we might draw a deeper understanding of the universe from debilitating brain damage. Bolte Taylor's rise to fame and neuro-guru-status began not with meningitis but with a cerebral hemorrhage, one that taught her how to find nirvana by allowing her "life-force power" to "flow like a great whale gliding through a sea of silent euphoria."

Japan court rules Apple did not infringe two Samsung patents

In the latest scuffle between Apple and Samsung, a Tokyo court has ruled that the iPhone 4 and 4S do not infringe on two of Sammy's patents. According to The Asahi Shimbun, a decision on September 14th found Apple had not violated a patent related to app downloads, as Samsung's method is different. A dispute regarding flight / airplane mode also went in Cupertino's favor on October 11th, because the technology in question was regarded by the court as incremental. Only one case against Apple remains undecided in Japan -- for a patent on using "homescreen space" -- but, as usual, don't expect that to be the last chapter in the neverending story.
