How to Cope with Bankruptcy | Best Financial and Excellent Real ...

How to Cope with Bankruptcy

Bankruptcy is a very emotionally charged experience in such a way that it can make a person feel a flood of emotions that can paralyze him and leave him hopeless. When this happens, it?s harder for him to hope or even imagine that he will still recover from the situation. If you have recently been adjudged as bankrupt by the court, the best thing that you can do is to sort your emotions until you exhaust yourself.

Initiate a Brain Drain

One of the easiest ways to experience emotional release after a bankruptcy is to write down your thoughts. The things that you write down don?t have to make sense. In fact, they don?t have to mean anything at all. Continue doing this until you can?t think of anything anymore. Initiating a brain drain is a great coping mechanism that allows you to express what you feel and think in a non-destructive way. When you finally get rid of all the negative emotions that you feel, it will be easier for you to entertain positive thoughts. Make sure you do this exercise every time you start to feel depressed by your situation.

Find an Outlet

Anger is an emotion, that when not released properly, has a way of making a person entertains thoughts that he normally wouldn?t think of. This is why you should find an outlet that will help you release your anger freely. Engaging in activities that allow you to channel your anger away from your body is a great way for you to have emotional release.

Read Inspiring Stories

Reading inspiring stories about people who also experience bankruptcy can eliminate the feeling of hopelessness that stops you from doing something to change your situation. Finding people you can relate to will help you realize that you are not alone in this situation. It will also make you feel that you are capable of surviving this financial turmoil. The stories that you read can also give you an idea on how you should start reorganizing your life.

Find a Support Group

Finding people who can help you through this situation can significantly speed up your recovery. Find people who can sympathize with you. The Internet is a great place to search for a support group that can guide you and help you move on from this emotional turmoil.

Giving yourself enough time to cope with bankruptcy is healthy. It allows you to collect your bearings until you feel you are ready to do something about your financial status.

Woman known as ?Sea Hag? accused of fatally shooting man who refused to give her a beer

Dukeshire (Monroe County Sheriff's Office)

A Florida Keys woman known as "Sea Hag" has been charged with fatally shooting a man who refused to give her a beer.

Carolyn Dukeshire, 62, was arrested late Sunday, charged with first-degree murder.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, Dukeshire shot 64-year-old Martin Mazur five times after Mazur denied her a beer.?Casey Whippo, who was with Mazur at the time of the shooting told police they had just returned from dinner to Mazur's house in Conch Key, were sitting outside and had just opened a beer. Dukeshire walked around the side of the house and asked if she could have one, the witness told investigators. When Mazur refused, he said, she opened fire, shooting him in the abdomen, twice in the back and once in the wrist.

After a struggle, she tossed the gun into a canal and sat down before police arrived. Mazur was rushed to Fisherman's Hospital in Marathon, Fla., where he later died.

According to KeysNews.com, Dukeshire, a fisherwoman, is being held without bond in the Monroe County Detention Center.

Lessons from the Olympics, by David Brooks | NYTimes eXaminer ...

July 27, 2012 ????? 2 Comments

olympics-london

By Marie Burns:

?Abraham Lincoln ? was right about slavery.? It?s good to know that New York Times columnist David Brooks is on the right side of history here.

Unless slaves are involved, ?a house divided against itself? is in good shape, according to Brooks. Apparently, Eric Cantor and the ?Just Say No? Republican Tea Party Congress are national treasures ? as long as they don?t openly advocate slavery. Other forms of systematic oppression ? A-Okay.

?The Olympics are a peaceful celebration of our warlike nature.? For example, the Olympics village is ?just a magical, fairy-tale place, like Alice in Wonderland, where everything is possible. You could win a gold medal and you can sleep with a really hot guy.? ? Carrie Sheinberg, former U.S. Olympics skier and de facto American goodwill ambassador. I?d assume the nationality of the temporary partner is less important than the hotness. If, like me, you are not possessed of a ?warlike nature,? consider yourself abnormal. And do not waste your time trying to hook up at the Olympic Village. Olympians will not ?celebrate? you.

The opening ceremony ? are [sic.] a lavish celebration of the cooperative virtues: unity, friendship, equality, compassion and care.? Caveat: Don?t display the South Korean flag when introducing North Korean athletes. Many of the Korean players may be biological kin, but the North Koreans are just not into ?unity, friendship, equality, compassion and caring? for their South Korean cousins.

?There will be a lot of dancing.? This is a bore, but it?s what we ?exceptional? Americans have come to expect from the dimwitted Brits.

It?s hard to know just how well [the London Olympic games] will turn out. There are a few things that were disconcerting: the stories about the private security firm not having enough people, the supposed strike of the immigration and customs officials ? that obviously is not something which is encouraging?. There are three parts that make the games successful. Number one of course are the athletes?. Number two are the volunteers?. But number three are the people of the country. Do they come together and celebrate the Olympic moment? That?s something we only find out once the games actually begin. ? Mitt Romney, to NBC News? Brian Williams, Wednesday

As as exceptional American wearing a genuine gold U.S. flag pin, one also has to wonder if the Brits are as patriotic as are those on this side of the pond. We?ll see.

?England [sic.],? after all, ?is just a small island. Its roads and houses are small. With few exceptions, it doesn?t make things that the rest of the world wants to buy. And if it hadn?t been separated from the continent by water, it almost certainly would have been lost to Hitler?s ambition.? ? Mitt Romney, No Apology. It was awfully nice of Brooks to write a column reminding us that his favorite presidential candidate is in ?England? embarrassing our exceptional country every time he opens his mouth.

We like to watch dancers because ?we?re social, semi-herdlike creatures, we take a primordial pleasure in the sight of a large number of people moving in unison.? We the little people are a bovine lot, genetically wired to follow the leader and fit seamlessly into our assigned roles. Perhaps communism is the angel of our better natures. (See Brooks on ?our followership problem.? Sometimes we don?t do our ?semi-herdlike? best.)

Dance is physical, like sports, but, in many ways, it is the opposite of sports. In dance, the purpose is to blend with and mirror each other; in sport, the purpose is to come out ahead. Dancers perform for the audience and offer a gift of emotion; athletes respond to one another and the spectators are just there to witness and cheer. Dancers, especially at the opening ceremony, smile in warmth and friendship. No true sport is ever done smiling (this is the problem with figure skating and competitive cheerleading)?.

If the opening ceremony is win-win, most of the rest of the games are win-lose. If the opening ceremony mimics peace, the competitions mimic warfare. It?s not about the brotherhood of humankind. It?s about making sure our country beats the Chinese in the medal chart.

This is a long passage, so it affords several lessons. First, a good essay often compares and contrasts one phenomenon with another, a column-writing prescription Brooks likely learned in his 8th-grade English class. Second, figure-skating is not a sport. (What about dressage? If the horses don?t smile during performances, I?ll bet the riders do.) And, third, it turns out that lovely opening ceremony is a communistic sham. Not all lessons are equal.

The games comprise ?a celebration of the competitive virtues: tenacity, courage, excellence, supremacy, discipline and conflict.? Who knew ?supremacy? and ?conflict? were virtues? Luckily, we have David Brooks to inform us of the less obvious virtues.

The marathoner struggling against exhaustion, the boxer trying to pummel his foe, the diver resolutely focused on her task. The purpose is to be tougher and better than the people who are seeking the same pinnacle?.

Through fierce competition, sport separates the elite from the mediocre. It identifies the heroes and standards of excellence that everybody else can emulate (a noble loser can serve as well as a talented winner). The idea is not to win friendship; it?s to win glory. We get to see people experiencing the thrill of victory from the agony of defeat and judge how well they respond.

There is always a place for clich?s and bromides, even if Brooks 8th-grade English teacher said otherwise. S/he, after all, never got a job at the New York Times.

? the Olympic Games appeal both to our desire for fellowship and our desire for status, to the dreams of community and also supremacy. And, of course, these desires are in tension. But the world is, too. The world isn?t a jigsaw puzzle that fits neatly and logically together. It?s a system of clashing waves that can never be fully reconciled.

If you?re reckless enough, clich?s and bromides can turn into grand metaphors, handy for oversimplifying complex dynamics in fewer than 800 words ? Brooks? New York Times biweekly allotment. The ?tensions? of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad are ?waves? clashing against the ?tensions? of Benjamin Netanyahu. You cannot fit waves into a jigsaw puzzle. They will splash and clash till the puzzle pieces get awfully soggy.

?The enduring popularity of the Olympics teach [sic.] the lesson that if you find yourself caught between two competing impulses, you don?t always need to choose between them. You can go for both simultaneously.? If you?re reckless enough, clich?s and bromides can turn into personal philosophy. Also, it is definitely unnecessary to have noun and verb agree; maybe that?s symptomatic of ?competing inpulses? or ?clashing waves.?

?F. Scott Fitzgerald famously said that the mark of a first rate intelligence is the ability to hold two contradictory thoughts in your mind at the same time.? Don?t cite only one authority ? see Lincoln, above ? when you can cite two or three.

?Some parents and teachers like the cooperative virtues and distrust the competitive ones, so, laughably, they tell their kids that they are going to play sports but nobody is going to keep score.? Forget ?cooperation,? kiddies; bullying and brute force are the names of the game. We call it ?sports? and applaud ?good sportsmanship,? but that was an ethos of another time. Athletics is not for fun, recreation or personal physical, mental and social development. If you don?t play to win, you?re a loser. Even if your ?laughable? teacher isn?t keeping score. Here, Brooks looks back past the 8th grade into an earlier, frightening time when circumstances forced him to learn how to negotiate the delicate bully-v.-bullied equipoise.

Politics has become a contest of monomaniacs. One faction champions austerity while another champions growth. One party becomes the party of economic security and the other becomes the party of creative destruction. The right course is usually to push hard in both directions, to be a house creatively divided against itself, to thrive amid the contradiction.

If you?re reckless, clich?s and bromides can turn into confusing political prescriptions. Are monomaniacs desirable? Should they stand their ground? Or should individual monomaniacs ?push hard in both directions? until they tear themselves asunder? Being one of the non-warrior subset of little people, I?m afraid I had trouble processing David Brooks? Big Idea.

All I learned is this: cooperation is for sissies.

And there will be dancing.

Let the games begin.

TRUE FUNKIN' FRIENDS | The Museum Of UnCut Funk

What is a friend? ?I?ve always said and still say that my love and friendship are eternal. ?It?s just the way I?m built, the way I am, the way I was brought up. ?Unfortunately not everyone holds this to be true. ?Someone once said that ?Friendship is the golden thread that ties the hearts of people around the world.? ?According to ?Google,? a friend is a?person whom one knows and with whom one has a bond of mutual affection, typically exclusive of sexual or family relations.

I say friendship is a relationship of unconditional love and respect that transcends time and space. ?Those who presume that another person is a friend with no evidence of the aforementioned ideals is delusional. ?Friendship Day?celebrations take place on the first Sunday of August every year. ?The tradition of dedicating a day in honor of friends began in the US in 1935. ? All true FUNKIN friends know that friendship is everyday. ?There are people you call friends and those that are associates, colleagues and acquaintances. ?I write this in efforts to better define for myself and all taking time out to read this, the reality of the relationship, with those we have bestowed the title ? to enlighten those who have yet to discover what true friendship really is. ?It?s not always easy coming to the conclusion or facing the fact that a person, one once called a friend, no longer considers themselves to be a friend of yours, it hurts. ?It hurts because an emotional investment has been made and now the sentiment is no longer reciprocal. ?It especially hurts when one party has not been made aware by thought word or deed, prior to their realization, that the other party no longer has any vested interests in what was once considered a friendship. ?There are instances where no harm is intended, however, like a break up there?s pain. ?Life goes on and we make new friends, holding on to golden memories of friends that once were and those that are gone.

friendquotes 300x255 TRUE FUNKIN FRIENDS The first thing that pops up when googling the word friend(s), is the hit television show of the same name. ?Ironically, currently on the cable network Showtime, are two former cast members of the ?Friends? show. ?Lisa Kudrow and Matt LeBlanc, both currently have shows on the network. ?The other day I saw a promo that had LeBlanc calling Kudrow, asking her to do a cameo and/ or make an appearance on his show. ?LeBlanc is asking Kudrow via telephone, only to soon realize she?s hung up. ?This is indicative of the result of friendships of millions of people day after day, year after year, decade after decade. ?Some people just hang (it) up, they stop ?hanging in there.? ?They just stop caring for one reason or another, who knows? ?Some folks just decide that their friendship with certain people has run it?s course, is no longer valid or necessary. ?This makes me sad because that?s never been my interpretation of friendship. ?Some people have to re-prioritize their time in lieu of children, new loves and/ or careers, but that doesn?t mean that they no longer consider you a friend ? or does it? ?After all, with various life changes, come new people and new friends. ?People choose their friends based on a certain lifestyle, some based on a way of thinking and others on a mutual belief regarding the quality of life. ?These are true FUNKIN? friends. ?Connections that are not superficial based on position, wealth, status or ones association with others ? or does it?

I was speaking to an ?old friend? recently. ?We lost touch about ten years ago, but still consider each other friends. ?I live in New York and they live in Los Angeles, but when we spoke, we were happy to connect. ?We caught up and it was like very little time had passed, despite the actual lapse. ?Although my friend was eager and happy to speak to me, they were not interested in speaking to the friend that actually introduced us, to each other. ??I don?t want to open that door yet,? was the sentiment expressed, due to tensions that existed between the two of them when they were last in each others company. ?This is understandable, one is not always willing or emotionally able to engage another where levels of tension exists ? I get it. ?They were not saying that they had no interest in speaking with the other friend ever again, just not at this time in their life, or at least not today ? ?Maybe next week,? they said. ?Yet, there was a sentiment that rang in their voice that they could potentially not speak to that person again, and be fine for the rest of their life. ?Sometimes this course of action is necessary for an individual to get on with their life. ?So what do you make of people who ?drift apart? when they had no qualms or issues? ?friendsquote2 294x300 TRUE FUNKIN FRIENDS

Sometimes friends ?grow apart? ? now what does that mean? ?Growing and Apart don?t even mesh, it?s an oxymoron. ?Growth is represented by development, strength and nurturing, the word Apart means just the opposite. ?Apart is symbolic of separation, being divided and removed from something, so to say people ?grow apart? almost makes no sense. ?But yet it does, in that, the friendship that once was, is now only becoming more and more estranged, distant, invalid and of no importance. ??Absence makes the heart grow fonder? ? unless you?re trying to cut a mother*uck*r off. ?Like all relationships, friendship is a mutually shared commitment and responsibility. ?It?s a responsibility because once two people decide and/ or determine that they are friends, it?s on both parties to grow that relationship. ?It can be work, but it should be easy. ?So where am I going with this? ?I think I?m already there, I believe I?ve expressed in no uncertain terms what I feel and believe a friendship is and what it?s supposed to be. ?Perhaps you don?t see certain friends as often as one would like, but that doesn?t mean the friendship ends. ?Perhaps two people don?t always agree on certain personal, political or religious choices, that doesn?t mean they can?t share the same space ? or does it? ?Actually, for many it does, but that?s a different interpretation of friendship for me. ?We can grow from our differences if we?re not enemies.

friendsnoopy 270x300 TRUE FUNKIN FRIENDS One who has worked in entertainment for 25 years, a friend once told me ?If you want a friend in this business, get a dog.? ?Known for their loyalty and unconditional love, I thought that was good advice, I didn?t get one though. ?While a dog can be a great companion, a dog can?t have a conversation with you or offer advice (like my friend) about life. ?You can?t go to the movies or to dinner with a dog, because you have to go home to feed it. ?Pets are precious to pet lovers, but pets are not people. ?Pets go along with whatever you do because you?re providing and taking care of that animal. ?Friends are fellow human beings, other beings you can be human with when you?re not in a position where you have to be someone other than who you truly are. ?We all have to wear different hats in various?aspects of life, take on and/ or present other aspects of ourselves while?at work or in the company of certain associates. ?Some people can be more of themselves with friends than they can with members of their own family. ?Some people don?t have a filter in any environment. ?There are some folks that find themselves in positions where they have to be and/ or portray an image or live up to a certain standard that?s expected in any given circumstance, pleasing their spouse or their parents. ?There are fortunately people who are comfortable in their own skin to always be who they are. ?A friend always knows the truth about another friend. ?Some friends can have a full on conversation between themselves, while being in the midst of not being able to speak freely. ?Friendship means never having to bite your tongue and the friend on the other side of the conversation fully understands and respects what you?re conveying without being offended. ?Friendship is having an argument, agreeing to disagree and then breaking bread together, then sharing genuine laughter the rest of the night.

Friendship is encountering those who decide you?re worth the time, and feel that the time spent was effortless. ?Once one finds spending time with another requires too much effort, the friendship is altered. ?Does that mean that where two people once were can not be re-visited? ?I don?t think so, but there are millions I?m sure that would disagree and millions of instances to the contrary. ?Some people put faith into another person or collective of people, eventually coming to their senses when they?ve detached from that herd or group, realizing those folks were never their friends. ?Some people just move on. ?Some may say a person holding on to false hope is a fool, yet, often having hope in a ?friend,? is what enables so many to simply continue living. ?It?s not always that ones hope is based upon the actions of another, but it happens an awful lot.

So many have found friends and acquaintances of long ago on the social network that is Facebook. ?While it phenomenal, it?s crazy how once you find some people, you remember why you stopped communicating so often with that ?friend? in the first place ? but it?s nice to see em, and not really have to. ?I didn?t write this to necessarily draw any conclusions, but simply to define and express what friendship means to me and share it with any one up for a friendly perspective. ?I wish all my friends were for always, but sometimes that?s just not the case. ?Sometimes I?ll run into an old acquaintance or colleague that says ?Do you still talk to??, nine times out of ten the answer is yes, because the one asking obviously recognized when we were in more frequent correspondence, that my friendship with the one of which they speak, was a true FUNKIN? friend.facebookfriends 282x300 TRUE FUNKIN FRIENDS

That?s it I guess ? words written to better help myself and others discern who are friends, and detach from those who are not. ?My hope is that friends and friends of friends will find this and hopefully share it with a friend. ?True friends and kindred spirits are never far apart and those that are truly friends, will always be. ?In an era where violence and the cult of celebrity are paramount, the purity of friendship is essential. ??To all my friends? ? Opening Ceremony London 2012: wit and charm on a midsummer's night

The opening ceremony of the London 2012 Summer Olympics offered China ? and the world ? a lesson. And yes, it crackled with British music, literature, and humor.

By Mark Sappenfield,?Staff writer / July 27, 2012

The Olympic rings light up the stadium during the opening ceremony at the 2012 Summer Olympics Friday in London.

Supposedly, it was London?s bad fortune to be the next Summer Olympics host after Beijing. Who, after all, could top that opening ceremony??

Instead, London offered China ? and the rest of the world ? a lesson.

Superpower? Been there, done that.

In an opening act rare among those in the history of Olympic opening ceremonies, the London organizers did something extraordinary: They were honest.

What other nation, in a moment of national glory that politicians pay billions of dollars to win, would allow such a view of their own country to be broadcast to the world?

One that has been there, done that, and no longer has anything to prove to anyone.

In a night that crackled with British music, literature, and humor ? yes, that was the actual queen with 007 ? it was an opening act about the Industrial Revolution that made this night as memorable as the one in Beijing four years ago.

Not for the pyrotechnics, which were impressive but not to be compared to Beijing, but for a story that dared to be heartbreaking ? that invited the viewer to consider how the Industrial Revolution that began in English mills rippled out to change the English countryside, the world economy, and the human condition.

This, to say the least, was a change of pace from four years ago.

The brilliance of the opening act was in its initial subtlety ? and perhaps impossible to fully appreciate on television. An hour before the ceremonies began, while the stadium was still silent but for the hum of the arriving crowd, the country village set in the center of the Olympic Stadium was inhabited.

Horses pulled carriages. Farmers actually harvested wheat. Boys played cricket. Girls danced around the maypole. When the live sheep entered, they got an ovation from the crowd.

Danny Boyle, the Oscar-winning director of ?Slumdog Millionaire? and the artistic force behind these opening ceremonies, was just setting us up. He was inviting us to become immersed and involved ? to watch the pretty couple playing badminton, to witness soccer become rugby as the players picked up the ball and started bowling through each other with childlike enthusiasm.

CULVER CITY: Child Victim of Pit Bull Attack to Settle Lawsuit

CULVER CITY, California ? ?The Santa Monica City Council approved a possible $325,000 settlement to compensate 7-year-old Zachary Rasmussen for injuries the boy sustained in a vicious pit bull attack at Memorial Park in nearly two years ago, according to an article posted by the Culver City Patch.

The attack on the child left him with some brain damage and the lawsuit requested compensation for medical bills, rehabilitation, future health care expenses and damages for pain and suffering.

Attorneys for Rasmussen filed a lawsuit in March 2011 against both the city and the owner of the dog named Monster who in October 2010 jumped up and knocked open an unlocked gate at the park?s fenced small dog run. The child was attacked on his head, neck, shoulders and back, according to the lawsuit.

The city acknowledged its own negligence played a role in the unprovoked attack. Deputy City Attorney Lance Gams told council members that the service gate opened by the dog was one that was rarely used. He advised the council to approve the settlement to avoid trial and the potential that a jury might award the boy more than $1 million, the article said.

The approval of a Los Angeles Superior Court judge is required before the settlement is deemed to be official, the report said.

Dog Attack Statistics

More than 1,000 Americans are injured every day by dogs, according to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

Sudanese with US residency on trial for protest

CAIRO (AP) ? A Sudanese court charged two nationals Wednesday with membership in an organization that incites violence against the regime, their lawyer said.

It is the first such serious criminal charge from the latest wave of anti-government protests.

Lawyer AlMutassem al-Haj Ahmed said the charges against Rudwan Dawoud and Ahmed Mahjoub could carry a death sentence if it is proved they used violence.

Dawoud is married to an American and has a U.S. residency permit.

The two were arrested on July 4 in a southern Khartoum neighborhood along with 10 others. The authorities accused them of planning a protest in which they intended to use fire bombs and burn vehicles. The judge freed the other 10, Ahmed said.

The lawyer said Dawoud admitted to the court that he had called for a peaceful protest against the government's austerity policy, adopted last month. The new measures, which significantly raised the prices of fuel and basic commodities, have sparked an unprecedented wave of protests around Sudan which appeared to be partially inspired by the Arab uprisings around the region.

Although more limited in scope, the protests were met with a harsh security crackdown and a detention campaign. Activists say protesters and activists are detained almost on a daily basis.

Lawyer Ahmed said more than 160 protesters were tried for lesser charges than Dawoud and Mahjoub, and only a handful were fined for disrupting public order. Ahmed said another protester was ordered flogged, a common punishment in Sudan.

"This is the first time someone has been charged with inciting the use of violence," Ahmed said.

Washington, D.C. Comets and asteroids preserve the building blocks of our Solar System and should help explain its origin. But there are unsolved puzzles. For example, how did icy comets obtain particles that formed at high temperatures, and how did these refractory particles acquire rims with different compositions? Carnegie's theoretical astrophysicist Alan Boss and cosmochemist Conel Alexander* are the first to model the trajectories of such particles in the unstable disk of gas and dust that formed the Solar System. They found that these refractory particles could have been processed in the hot inner disk, and then traveled out to the frigid outer regions to end up in icy comets. Their meandering trips back and forth could help explain the different compositions of their rims. The research is published in Earth and Planetary Science Letters.

The young Sun is thought to have experienced a series of outbursts caused by the rapid infall of disk gas onto the Sun. The leading mechanism for explaining such outbursts is a phase of disk instability. The researchers modeled the trajectories of several hundred centimeter-sized melilite mineral particles during a phase of disk instability. These particles are similar to calcium-aluminum-rich inclusions (or CAIs), the refractory particles often found in well-preserved meteorites, as well as the comet Wild 2.

Their disk model assumed a marginally gravitationally unstable, fully three-dimensional disk, with a mass of about 5 % of today's Sun and temperatures ranging from a frigid -350 F (60K) in the outer regions, to a scorching 2240 F (1500K) near the center. Their calculations allowed the CAIs to orbit in the disk while being subjected to gas drag and the gravity of both the disk and the Sun.

The particles started orbiting in unison, but after about 20 years their trajectories started to diverge significantly. Most struck the inner boundary of the disk at 1 AU (the Earth/Sun distance), while others went to the outer boundary at 10 AU, where they could be swept up by a growing comet. About 10% migrated back and forth in the disk before hitting one or the other boundary.

The researchers then modeled the evaporation and condensation processes that the particles would experience during their migrations and found that such particles were likely to acquire outer rims with varied isotopic compositions recently shown to characterize CAIs.

"CAIs are thought to have formed at the very beginning of the Solar System. Our results show that they must have experienced remarkably complex histories as they were transported chaotically all over the disk," remarked Alexander.

These migrations could explain the different oxygen isotopes that have been found in particles from meteorites. These are varieties of oxygen atoms with different numbers of neutrons, which point to different processing conditions for the particle rims.

Previous work by Boss had shown that oxygen isotope abundances could vary in an unstable disk by the range found in meteorites. Coupled with the new results, these models show that several puzzles may have been solvedan unstable disk can explain both large-scale outward transport of refractory particles, as well as the peculiar rim compositions acquired during their journeys.

"It's nice to solve two problems at once," said Boss. "But there are still many more puzzles about meteorites for us to work on."

Research ban for surgeons after probiotic experiment

It sounds like a particularly lurid episode of the TV medical drama House: in a last-ditch attempt to help people with advanced brain cancer, their surgical wounds are deliberately infected with "probiotic" bacteria to stimulate their immune systems into fighting the tumours.

Rather than ending with miraculous recoveries, however, this incident led to two surgeons at the University of California, Davis, being banned from conducting research on human volunteers.

News of the surgeons' reprimand, revealed by the Sacramento Bee newspaper, has alarmed bioethicists. "There are a lot of red flags," says Jonathan Kimmelman of McGill University in Montreal, Canada, who studies the ethics of clinical research.

The case raises tough questions about the standards of evidence that should be met before experimental therapies are tested in people ? even those with just weeks to live who may feel that they have nothing to lose.

It also reveals a clash of cultures between surgeons, who are free to try experimental procedures with little regulation, and medical researchers who typically have to present reams of evidence from animal studies before winning approval to test new drugs or biological therapies on human volunteers.

Paul Muizelaar and Rudolph Schrot infected the surgical wounds of three people suffering from glioblastoma with Enterobacter aerogenes bacteria. Each patient was expected to die within weeks, and the pair reasoned that the only hope was to test the intriguing suggestion that people with glioblastoma tend to survive for longer if their surgical wounds get infected.

Bacterial boost

The idea is that an infection stimulates an inflammatory response that may also help fight the cancer. Despite multiple anecdotal reports, the idea has been investigated systematically in just two studies.

The first, published in 2009, looked at 382 people who underwent surgery for glioblastoma at Columbia University in New York. It found no evidence that the 18 who developed a post-operative infection survived for any longer.

A second study, run at the Catholic University of Rome in Italy and published in 2011, did find that patients whose wounds got infected lived longer. However, just 10 out of 197 patients developed infections, and the researchers conceded that the study was "not definitive".

Divided opinion

Specialists in glioblastoma are divided on whether the idea is worth pursuing. "The data is soft at best," concludes Mitchel Berger, head of neurological surgery at the University of California, San Francisco. But Jeffrey Bruce of Columbia University, a member of the team that found no evidence that infection helps, is more optimistic: "It's a reasonable thing to investigate," he says.

The three patients treated by Muizelaar and Schrot all died ? although Muizelaar notes that one lived for many months longer than had been expected. In a letter sent to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the university authorities say that two of the patients died of sepsis ? a systemic response to bacterial infection. Muizelaar disputes this conclusion, arguing that two died from cancer and just one from sepsis.

Muizelaar also maintains that he wasn't, as the university asserts, conducting clinical research without approval from a local ethical review board and the FDA. "It was not my intention to do a clinical trial," says Muizelaar, who describes his attempts to treat patients using bacterial infections as "innovative care".

For Kimmelman, the case illustrates the different standards that apply in experimental surgery, compared to research on drugs and biological therapies. "The realm of surgery is virtually unregulated," says Kimmelman. "There's very little pressure on surgeons to rigorously evaluate their procedures."

When Muizelaar and Schrot started infecting patients with bacterial cultures, however, they moved from the realm of surgery into a therapy that the FDA would classify as an experimental drug. "There probably is a clash of cultures here," Kimmelman observes.

NJ 2011 Economic Activity In The Red [AUDIO]

Governor Chris Christie insists the ?New Jersey Comeback? has begun. He stresses the word, ?begun.?

Spencer Platt, Getty Images

A new report issued by Well Fargo shows the comeback could take a while because in 2011, economic activity in the Garden State unexpectedly slipped into negative territory.

?New Jersey was one of seven states that had a negative output in 2011,? explains Wells Fargo senior economist Anika Khan. ?If we look at other neighboring states we see that New York and Pennsylvania both saw increases in their output.?

Khan points to New Jersey?s housing situation as the reason for the Garden State?s slip. Real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) fell 0.5 percent with real estate, rentals, and leasing knocking off a 1.1 percentage points. The study says real estate, rentals and leasing have detracted from economic growth for the past three years, with the pace of decline accelerating.

If you could set aside the housing component, New Jersey?s GDP was positive last year. It increased 0.6 percent year-over-year. Trade, information, durable-goods manufacturing, professional and business services and health care all showed improvement.

?I would say that overall momentum continues to improve (in New Jersey), but at a slower pace,? explains Khan. Referring to last year, she says, ?We think that this is really just a blip and that we should continue to see improvement in the state.?

Following three years of declines, employment grew 0.11 percent in 2011 and is up 0.6 percent since the beginning of this year. New Jersey?s coincident index, which is a more up-to-date monthly indicator of economic activity, showed gradual improvement in 2011. The measure shows overall economic activity has been in positive territory since late 2009 and has increased 3.8 percent over the past two and a half years. For these reasons Khan calls New Jersey?s negative output, ?a head-scratcher.?

The study also looked at New Jersey?s high level of debt and weak pension and other post-employment benefits (OPEB) funding, which led to all three rating agencies downgrading New Jersey?s outstanding general obligation bonds last year, remain as pressing issues for the state.

In 2011, net tax-supported debt was about $34.97 billion, with New Jersey ranking third in the nation behind California and New York.
