Pirlo puts in crafty performance against Germany

WARSAW, Poland (AP) -Andrea Pirlo twirled around defenders effortlessly, and even cleared a ball off the line. On both sides of the field, it was Pirlo that provided the inspiration.

The Italy playmaker didn't score, but he still helped Italy beat Germany 2-1 Thursday in the European Championship semifinals and set up a match against Spain on Sunday in Kiev.

Although he was named man of the match, Pirlo preferred to credit his teammates.

"The team was fantastic," Pirlo said. "We had a great win against a terrific side. We really hope to win the final and put in a terrific display in Kiev."

For the 33-year-old Pirlo, it was the second straight match for which he won plaudits for his incisive passing and flair in midfield. He controlled the pace against Germany and in the quarterfinals against England on Sunday. He sealed that performance with a superb chip in the penalty shootout.

On Thursday, it was Pirlo's defending that was needed early on in the match. He was glued to the goal line when Germany center back Mats Hummels' header seemed to be heading in. The ball hit Pirlo square in the chest and he cleared it off the line for Italy.

It was a crucial intervention, because the Germans had the better chances in the opening stages and going down a goal would have been a huge setback for the Italians.

Pirlo then commanded the tempo of the match, winning midfield duels and impressing the crowd at the National Stadium. A big cheer went up when Pirlo evaded a marker in the center circle with a backheel flick and then spun around to collect the ball again.

Most midfielders are already in decline at Pirlo's age, but the Italian appears to still be in his prime. He led Juventus to an undefeated Serie A season and the Italian title last month, a year after AC Milan gave up on him. He is among just four remaining members of the squad that won the 2006 World Cup.

"I've always given my best," Pirlo said. "Now that we're here in this final we've got to enjoy this to the fullest. But I'm not celebrating too much yet, because we still haven't done anything.

"We want to return home with the cup."

What should you know about copyright to ... - My Legal Briefcase

As producers of creative work, artists, writers and designers alike, often do not consider the importance of business transactions. Often too preoccupied with the idea of producing a piece of expression, or designing a solution, creators ?fail to follow the right steps in order to ensure that they are fairly compensated fairly for what their work is really worth.

If the number seems fair, there is a big chance that you are signing away a lot more than you are willing to. You should read the contract actively, and look up the words that you don?t understand.

Here are some basic rights that you should consider when selling the copyright to your work:

What is copyright?

Copyright refers to the exclusive right to publish, reproduce and sell a ?work.

Who owns copyright?

Generally, copyright subsists in the creator of the original work; however, copyright in a work can be sold or transferred to others under a variety of conditions. These conditions can vary based on usage, medium, temporality, etc.

Here are some rights that you should consider when signing a contract:

First Rights: The right to be the first to publish a work on a one-time-basis only. Any usage beyond this will be considered infringement of copyright.

Second Rights: The right to re-use an image that has been originally used elsewhere.

Non-exclusive Rights: When the artist as well as the client have the right to both reproduce and sell the image to third parties. This typically creates an unfavourable situation for both parties since an accessible piece of artwork loses its value relatively quickly.

Sublicensing Rights: Refers to a party, other than the creator of the work, owning the right to sell the copyright of an image to any third party. This is a situation one would want to avoid.

All Rights or a Buyout: Refers to the purchase of all rights of usage, while the artist maintains the authorship of the work. This is a situation that can work quite well for the artist if the compensation is fair.

Moral Rights: Refers to the rights that an author can retain which protect the work from being altered without the author?s permission. This right is meant to protect the integrity of the original piece of work. Moral rights can also assure that the client must obtain the creator?s consent in order to modify or update the work.

Fair Use: The right to reproduce a work of art for a very limited and specific purpose without requiring the consent of the copyright owner. An example of this would be the use of a small portion of a book for educational purposes.

Right of Celebrity: The right to use an image of a celebrity for a newsworthy purpose. One may not simply reproduce a celebrity?s image for profit without running the risk of being the target of a lawsuit.?

Two commitments, one departure on U.Va. football team

After two years of full recruiting classes, Virginia's football team likely will have fewer scholarships to give out in this summer's recruiting cycle.

As a result, the Cavaliers are getting more early commitments as prospects are saving their spots.

The Wahoos picked up two offensive linemen this week, as Massachusetts' Jack McDonald and New Jersey's Brad Henson gave verbal pledges to coach Mike London.

They represent the 14th and 15th commitments of the recruiting cycle. NCAA rules cap a team at 25 scholarships per year, but allow no more than 85 at any one time. This year's U.Va. class will be subject to the second restriction, and likely won't go higher than 20 scholarship players.

Part of that is subject to attrition on the team, and a U.Va. spot became open this week as well.

Linebacker Caleb Taylor, a Tidewater native, will transfer to Old Dominion. Taylor was a freshman who redshirted in 2011.

Because the Monarchs still are an FCS program this year, he will be able to play immediately and retain a full four years of eligibility.

ODU is in an unusual position to bring in players without penalty this year, something it won't be able to do in 2013 when it plays an FBS schedule. Virginia Tech linebacker Nick Dew is another touted player making that jump.

At U.Va., London will look to finish strong as he can afford to be more selective with his final scholarships. He also will have leverage with players as he tries to secure early commitments.

McDonald and Henson provided two of those on the offensive line. Each is a three-star prospect who received offers from other BCS schools.

News Press Release Creates Moral Panic In The Society

An article printed in a newspaper published through news press release states that there was a time when a printed word in the newspaper was held sacrosanct. Now, the competition is driving the media to give a new meaning to the everyday events by twisting the facts. Stephan Cohen?s moral panic model explains the methods used by the media top press release sites to exaggerate and distort the event. Moral panic refers to an exaggerated reaction given by the media or people to a particular event. The overreaction leads to exaggerated the seriousness of the event. The people or the group, social deviants who are targeted by the News Press Release driven media for causing the harm in the society are called folk devils, says Cohen.

Moral panics created by the media news press release backed by interest groups and pressure groups are always looking to create an impact on the social and political institutions.

In the instances such as drug taking, the hippie movement, pro-development lobbies and animal rights, the participants generated heated debate in the society as well as brought about legal and institutional reforms. However in some cases, the long lasting impact of the paid press release distribution reportage was neither felt nor seen. Eg. The introduction of Spinning Jenny or starting point of industrialization when machines were considered a bad omen or evil did not last long.

The second aspect of scrutiny is did it establish laws, agencies, groups, movements to further the cause reported by top press release sites or moral panic created? The answer to this question lies on two issues: 1. Social change 2. Creating institutions or laws that will substantially alter the existing socioeconomic balance of the society. In some cases, moral panic created by news press release brings about a social change eg. Drug abuse. It has led to the establishment of new laws and new ways of policing mechanism. The moral panic has also made government agencies react and rejig their style of functioning. The recent example can be of war on terror reported by top press release sites. Its impact on people is huge and government agencies have established a series of institutions and laws to tackle terrorists, who righteously claim to be fighting for their own sectarian causes.

Third, changes in normative and informative structures which comes in due to moral panics created by the online press release distribution media. In this, we need to look at the response given to an incident or an idea by the societal structures. If the moral panic holds on and changes the existing equilibrium then we can safely say moral panic will transform the structures. Example: anti-abortion reportage. While conservative lobbies have created a moral panic about the issue, the people and the authorities at large have not taken given in and the moral panic has failed to rigidify the moral boundaries.

The fourth question is about the transformation that moral panics bring about in the society. It has been observed that moral panic does impact the society in some way or the other. The degree of change may differ from event to event, distributed by top press release sites and it does seek to regulate the human response by repeating the same media news, laws, stories by means of which the social stability is perceived to be disturbed.

Northwest sees record returns of sockeye salmon

Record numbers of a once-waning population of sockeye salmon have been returning to the Northwest's Columbia Basin this summer, with thousands more crossing the river's dams in a single day than the total numbers seen in some previous years.

Since Bonneville Dam outside Portland was built in 1938, there have been plenty of times there weren't 38,000 sockeye salmon swimming over the fish ladders in a whole year. But on Monday that many passed the Columbia River dam, and another 41,000 swam over the dam on Wednesday ? a rate of nearly 30 a minute. That bought the total so far to 290,000.

A record run of more than 400,000 of the Columbia Basin's farthest-swimming salmon are expected to return this year, almost all of them wild fish bred in rivers, instead of the hatcheries that produce most Northwest salmon.

Sockeye cross nine dams to reach spawning grounds in northern Washington and Canada.

Biologists credit habitat improvements in the Okanagan Basin of northern Washington and Canada, improved dam operations, and favorable ocean conditions for the numbers. Okanagan sockeye swim more than 500 mils to spawn.

The bulk of the record returns are going back to the Okanagan River Basin, which drains a series of lakes straddling the Canadian border and flows into the Columbia.

"I have been telling people if they get the opportunity, to go up and visit the Okanagan," said Bill Tweit, special assistant to the director of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. "It's going to be an incredible natural spectacle."

Smaller than most salmon at three to five pounds, sockeye are also the brightest in color. They are popularly known as bluebacks for their silvery blue hue as they pass Bonneville Dam, but as they get closer to laying their eggs in the gravels of rivers and lakes in the fall, their bodies turn bright red and their heads green.

Though the Okanagan sockeye were never listed as an Endangered Species, as Snake River sockeye in Idaho were, the future was not looking bright for Okanagan sockeye in the late 1980s and early 1990s, said Joe Peone, fish and wildlife director for the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Indian Reservation, which is in the Okanagan Basin.

Fewer than 9,000 sockeye returned to the Columbia Basin in 1995.

The operation of hydroelectric dams regularly washed out the eggs after the fish laid them in the river, or left them high and dry before they hatched. Sockeye proved difficult to rear in hatcheries, so tribes on both sides of the border teamed up with local utilities that owned the dams to work out rules for maintaining flows that the fish could live with. Natural meanders were restored to rivers that had been straightened to reduce flooding.

"Right now those fish are utilizing maybe a quarter of their historic habitat," Peone said. If more habitat is restored, "You could see 1 million fish coming back here."

Ritchie Graves, a NOAA Fisheries Service biologist who makes sure federally owned dams are living up to their Endangered Species Act obligations not to kill too many salmon, said the survival rate for young salmon swimming downstream to the ocean has been higher than ever the past three years, hitting about 50 percent for sockeye.

Those improved dam operations have also benefited chinook, coho, chums, pinks and steelhead, said Graves. The six species combined accounted for 1.8 million salmon over Bonneville in 2010, compared to 471,144 in 1938.

Once young salmon get to the ocean, scientists have only a vague idea where they go, and an incomplete understanding of why some years they thrive and some years they starve. Generally, years when climate and weather cause the ocean waters to well up, salting the water column with food, fish do better. But unlike most salmon, which eat other fish, sockeye eat plankton, tiny shrimplike animals.

Though poor ocean conditions have been blamed for a nosedive in chinook salmon in Alaska this year, sockeye have done well, not only in the Columbia, but in Canadian and Alaskan rivers as well.

"Whatever is going on in the ocean is basically being good to sockeye," said Tweit.

Researcher finds timing of ADHD medication affect academic progress

Monday, June 25, 2012

A team of researchers led by an epidemiologist at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and University of Iceland has found a correlation between the age at which children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) begin taking medication, and how well they perform on standardized tests, particularly in math.

The study, titled, "A Population-Based Study of Stimulant Drug Treatment of ADHD and Academic Progress in Children," appears in the July, 2012, edition of Pediatrics, and can be viewed online on June 25. Using data from the Icelandic Medicines Registry and the Database of National Scholastic Examinations, the researchers studied 11,872 Icelandic children born between 1994 and 1996. The children started medication for ADHD at different times between fourth and seventh grades.

The findings showed that children who began drug treatment within 12 months of their fourth-grade test declined 0.3 percent in math by the time they took their seventh-grade test, compared with a decline of 9.4 percent in children who began taking medication 25-to-36 months after their fourth-grade test.

The data also showed that girls benefited only in mathematics, whereas boys had marginal benefits in math and language arts.

"Children who began taking medications immediately after their fourth-grade standardized tests showed the smallest declines in academic performance," said the study's lead author Helga Zoega, PhD, Post Doctoral Fellow of Epidemiology at Mount Sinai's Institute for Translational Epidemiology. "The effect was greater in girls than boys and also greater for children who did poorly on their fourth grade test."

Stimulants are widely used in the United States as a therapeutic option for children with inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity associated with ADHD. The medications are less frequently used in Europe, although their use in Iceland most closely resembles the U.S. Long-term follow-up studies of stimulant use and academic performance are scarce, according to the researchers.

Several missing after roof collapse at mall in Canada

ELLIOT LAKE, Ontario (AP) ? Rescue teams and dogs searched through the rubble Sunday at a shopping mall in Canada where a roof collapsed through two floors, leaving several people missing and 22 people slightly injured.

Authorities said no casualties have been reported and the names of the missing continue to be crossed off the list as members of the community account for their loved ones. But a number of people remain unaccounted for since the collapse Saturday afternoon at Algo Centre Mall in the northern Ontario city of Elliott Lake.

Stephan Powell of Toronto Fire Services said 40 members of the Heavy Urban Search and Rescue team were removing pieces of the structure in an effort to extricate anyone who might have been trapped.

Kate Matuszewski, a spokeswoman for city, said emergency services were removed at one point Saturday due to safety issues.

Ontario Provincial Police Inspector Percy Jollymore urged anyone worried about missing loved ones to check in at an information center where police are tracking those who are unaccounted for.

A portion of the roof that serves as a parking area crumbled down two floors into an area near the food court, exposing metal and concrete supports. The collapse left behind a gaping hole which was 12 meters (39 feet) by 24 meters (79 feet), downed hydro lines and triggered a gas leak.

Emergency officials quickly cleared out the mall and closed surrounding roads. Mayor Rick Hamilton declared a state of emergency.

Ontario Provincial Police said 22 people were taken to hospital but none were seriously hurt.

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty said he was in touch with Elliot Lake's mayor and thanked emergency crews in the city for their efforts.

"As we anxiously wait to learn more about anyone thought to be missing in Elliot Lake, our thoughts and prayers are with their families, and also with those who have been injured and indeed with the entire community," McGuinty said in a statement.

Joe Drazil, a Zellers store employee, said several cars appeared to have fallen through the gaping hole near some escalators.

"You can see the roof with the cars hanging inside," he said. "Everybody was cleared from the whole mall. After that, there was numerous police and emergency vehicles coming from all over."

Shopper Jean-Marc Hayward was having coffee when the roof collapsed about 20 feet (6 meters) from him. He said a big hunk of concrete tumbled down through two floors and that it sounded like an explosion. "It was a big loud crash. It didn't just go down one floor it went down two floors," he said.

Hayward said a lottery terminal kiosk was located directly under the roof that caved in.

Hayward said he saw one man with a bloody face. Hayward, a dwarf who has trouble with his legs, said he couldn't run out.

"I was sucking in dust," he said.

Hayward and others have said the mall roof has leaked water for some time. There have long been buckets and tarps around the mall to collect leaking water, Hayward said.

"It's obvious there has been a lot of damage in the structure because of the water," Hayward said. "A couple of years ago they said they fixed all the leaks in the mall, but they didn't. You could tell every time it rained."

Powell could not confirm if rescue officials had been briefed about the water leaking issue.

The two-level mall in this northern Ontario community is approximately 200,000 square feet (18,580 sq. meters). It houses a grocery store, restaurants, a number of retail outlets, a hotel, and the constituency office for a member of the provincial parliament.

Rhonda Bear, a spokeswoman for the mall, which is run by Eastwood Mall Incorporated, said the company was referring all questions on the collapse and the condition of the mall to its lawyer, who could not immediately be reached for comment.

"All our concern right now is our prayers are with the families," Bear said.

Redeeming What Was Tossed: Fashion, Faith, and a California Designer's Creative Calling

With $300 to spend, Beth Giles made her way through the markets spread out over packed streets of Kampala, Uganda. The aisles were filled with vegetables, meats, spices, colorful local fabrics, and other handmade items being sold by local merchants. A few weeks prior to our trip, she had held a yard sale selling off used clothing, furniture, and other discarded items that now accounted for the recently converted currency in her pocket. (Beth has always been a salvager and creative entrepreneur. In her first business venture as a young girl, she collected dying roses from her neighbor's yard, made potpourri, and then sold it to friends and family.)

We had come to Kampala to help a newly formed NGO establish systems that would provide medical and educational care, as well as vocational training, for over 50 Ugandan orphans. On a rare morning off from our meetings with lawyers, directors of medical clinics, and school principals, Beth made her way down to markets for a few hours and allowed her creative mind to go to work. Most of us did not give much thought to the many fabrics and jewelry that she returned with a few hours later?we had come to expect that Beth's ability to find beauty and see potential in areas that others overlook would somehow unearth extraordinary treasures.

The surprise for me came nine months later, when several of us from the Ugandan trip sat in the audience at Beth's senior fashion show the following spring at California State University, Long Beach. In front of a packed auditorium, the fabrics, jewelry, and other wares that Beth had gathered in the Ugandan markets had been creatively transformed into the beautiful dresses and pieces of art that were now displayed before us. After the show, the lobby showcased each student's work and gave background information on the students and their projects. At the centre of Beth's display was the story of the Ugandan orphans and the work being done to help break the cycle of poverty and to empower the families afflicted with devastating losses by the AIDS epidemic. In the following weeks, Beth's work and the story of the Ugandan orphans were showcased in the fashion district of downtown Los Angeles.

Egypt's New President To Be Announced Sunday

Egypt will release official results from divisive presidential elections Sunday, the country's top elections commission official said, a highly anticipated announcement that will set the course for Egypt's political future after last year's revolution that ousted longtime ruler Hosni Mubarak but left the rest of his regime intact.

Tensions have risen since the June 16-17 runoff vote between the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate Mohammed Morsi and Mubarak's last prime minister Ahmed Shafiq, with both campaigns claiming victory by a narrow margin. The electoral commission postponed official results that had been scheduled to be announced on Thursday, leading to speculation that the military rulers are holding results hostage to bargaining and backroom deals with the Brotherhood on the distribution of power.

Many Egyptians have rallied behind Morsi as a chance to finally rid the country of the old regime, while others support Shafiq as the best bet to counter Islamists and restore stability in the country, which has faced more than a year of mass protests, rising crime economic woes after the 18-day revolution that forced Mubarak to step down on Feb. 11, 2011.

Sunday's announcement could finally determine whether Egypt will be ruled by a member of the long-suppressed fundamentalist Islamic group and make a break with six decades of military rule or remain confined in the parameters of the former regime. In the two cases, the new president will be weakened as the military rulers will be in firm control.

A third possibility is that Egypt remains in a political limbo, if the elections commission decides to annul the runoff vote and call for new elections in some or all constituencies, due to allegations of irregularities by both sides. The military has pledged to hand over power to civilian rule by July 1.

After days of confusion and uncertainty, Farouk Sultan, the head of the Supreme Presidential Election Commission, said Saturday the results would be announced the next day but didn't give further details.

The delay of election results coupled with a series of moves by the ruling military council aimed at consolidating power have largely brought the country to a standstill and raised fears of new violence if protesters are unhappy with the choice of new president.

The Muslim Brotherhood's leaders along with revolutionary groups, have vowed "a new revolution" if their candidate is not the winner, claiming that a loss would prove election fraud orchestrated by the military. Meanwhile, the ruling generals accused Islamists of stirring tension and threatened to crackdown on any violence by any group unhappy with election outcome.

CT Working Moms: A Goddess Gathering

We bloggers have a super secret blogger group on Facebook. It's a way for us to throw around ideas, ask each other questions and just plain old kibitz.

A while back, someone mentioned they were scared to click on a link to "Beyonce's Body After Baby." I think we all know what these headlines bring. All you have to do is do a simple Google search for "body after baby" and you see these celebrities with their impossible-to-attain-their-normal-size-nevermind-their-post-preggo-size photo spread in the latest gossip mag.

Now don't get me wrong, those women probably worked really hard to take the baby weight off and more power to them, but we average non-Victoria Secrets models do not have the luxury of Photoshop, airbrushing, personal trainers, private chefs, nannies or several pairs of Spanx. As the wise Katie Schunk stated, "I would be in mad shape if my paycheck depended on it!"

So we got to talking and the idea came up to do our own photo shoot where we would bare our post-baby bellies (in a sports bra, of course). We wanted to embrace our bodies and let the world know we are proud of our saggy stripes!

We picked a date, found our amazing photographer (the genius that is Jean Molodetz from I View Photography) and Kate Street opened her home to this rowdy crew of moms. We got together for our date and brought food and wine (LOTS of wine -- we weren't crazy enough to do this sober!) and started to chat like any old girls night out. It was kind of like an adult slumber party -- giddy women talking about our kids and hubbies, doing each others hair and makeup. We were just having fun laughing and giggling, but we had yet to take our shirts off.

I don't think any of us anticipated what would happen next.

It was a completely liberating moment. Some of us started out a bit nervous and shy, but encouraging comments and catcalls from the other ladies, and let's face it -- the wine -- made it easier. For me, I know I am far from what I may ultimately want my body to look like, but I know I have never felt more beautiful and accepting of my body than I did that night.

This turned out to be more than just a photo shoot to show what real mommy bellies look like or to help us embrace our body image differences -- there are a ton of websites out there that already do this. This was not just another girl's night out -- you can go to a restaurant for that.

This was a gathering of Goddesses.

Shedding our shirts and revealing the places where we grew humans (and one was actively growing) felt so freeing, inspiring and powerful it is hard to put it into words. Thankfully, the smiles on our faces, the laughter to the point of tears and the energetic joy radiating from each of us speaks for itself. As Marie Schweitzer put it, "It was one of my favorite things I've ever done!!!"

I will admit that when I look at pictures of myself (like I'm sure most women do), I pick apart all of the things I wish were different, more sucked in or just smaller. I end up feeling bad about myself and, instead of throwing in a workout DVD, I head to the freezer for a little therapy in an ice cream pint. When I looked through the photos of our shoot, I did do a bit of trash talk about my problem areas, but the feeling inside was completely different. I didn't feel depressed, I felt the energy of the night. I felt the joy, love and sisterhood of that moment and again felt beautiful.

So moms, before you skip down and look at our photos in the slideshow below, we have a mission for you. We want you to hold your own Goddess Gathering! Grab some wine, a sports bra, a camera and some girlfriends and take pictures of your bellies together! We have created a new place on the website for our "Goddess Gallery" and we want to include yours as well! Send me your photos at Dena@ctworkingmoms.com along with a short explanation of how your event went and we will post it on the site. The more women who participate in these events, the more we will accept our bodies and embrace them. It will be life-changing!

The Living Will-Establishing Your Medical Decisions | Tourist ...

Copyright 2006 Ronald Hudkins

A living will is not about who inherits your stocks and bonds when you die and it doesn?t designate who gets the family home or your mother?s jewelry. What a living will does is establish your wishes about what happens to you should you become terminally ill or permanently incapacitated. A living will is a binding set of advanced medical directives that dictates whether you will be kept alive via life support devices, or whether and when to pull the plug on those devices. Having a living will in place means that you make your final decisions rather than depending on your relatives or the state to make them. It can save turmoil and confusion over what you might have wanted, and it can spare your children or other heirs from having to make judgments they would rather not have to make.

What happens when you cannot speak for yourself? If you have not explicitly left instructions in the form of a living will, you are entirely at the mercy of others. Any number of events ? a car accident, a heart attack or a blood clot, for example ? can render a person permanently unable to speak and act on their own behalf. You might be allowed to die when you wished to be resuscitated or you might be kept alive through artificial means when you wished to be allowed to die. In a worst case scenario, you could even become an unwilling pawn in moral and legal arguments between competing political entities.

The Terry Schiavo case in Florida, which played out over the past decade and resulted in Schiavo?s death, provides a sad and gruesome illustration of the need for a living will.
? Schiavo?s ex-husband asserted that she had indicated, at some point during their marriage, that she would not want to live in a permanent vegetative state.
? Her parents wanted to keep her alive and argued that her, and their, Catholic beliefs precluded removing life support.
? The case was in and out of court with suits and counter suits that went on for years while Schiavo unknowingly awaited her fate in a nursing home.
? Conservative activists weighed in on the right to life and liberal activists weighed in on the right to death.
? Everyone from the Governor of Florida to Pope John Paul II and the worldwide media argued about Terry Schiavo.
? Ultimately, the ex-husband won the day in court; Schiavo was disconnected from the feeding and hydration tubes, and she slowly starved to death while the world kept vigil.

Can you prevent something similar happening to you? While the Schiavo case is an extreme example, many families go through some version of the same agonizing process when someone they love is either devastatingly ill or injured. In truth, only you know what your last wishes really are ? until and unless you put them in writing in the form of a living will. Here?s how it works:
? A living will only becomes effective if you are terminally ill or permanently incapacitated. Laws in most states direct that two doctors determine when a situation is hopeless.
? You have the right, under common law, to refuse any unwanted medical procedure, including insertion of a feeding/hydration tube. Conversely, you also have the right to receive the same lifesaving medical procedures.
? Even when doctors believe that there is no hope of recovery, they are bound by medical ethics to provide lifesaving procedures until a court order directs them otherwise.
? Both the medical community and the courts, however, must abide by your pre-determined wishes, if they are written down in the form of a living will.
? Families do not have to guess, second-guess one another, or spend the rest of their lives with doubts and regrets, if they know they are following your express wishes.

How do you go about making a living will? Ideally, the best option is to consult an attorney and have a legally unchallengeable living will prepared. However, there are numerous Internet sites that provide forms and instructions for creating an adequate living will that will hold up in any state court. The pertinent question isn?t really whether or not you need a living will, but how soon you can put one in place.

Enjoy a 1-Year Family Membership to Haystack Club in Vermont Including Unlimited Access to Golf and Skiing

Overtime Bidding

Why did the auction closing time extend by 10 minutes after I placed my bid? This is called "Popcorn" Bidding: Bids placed within 10 minutes prior to a lot's scheduled closing time will extend the closing time on that lot an additional 10 minutes. This gives all bidders an opportunity to place a competing bid. All lots will close when there have been no bids placed within the last remaining 10 minutes.

Max Bid

Your Max Bid is the most you are willing to pay for an auction item. Consider placing a Max Bid if you don?t have time to monitor an auction. Your Max Bid won't be displayed to other bidders, but will be displayed as the current bid based on the bidding increment. You won?t pay the Max Bid amount unless another bid bumps you up to the next increment.

Watching Items

You can monitor items you're interested in without placing a bid by selecting Watch This Item after you've logged into your account. Now you can keep track of the closing date, next minimum bid and number of bids from your Account page. We?ll email you a reminder to bid the morning items you are watching close. You can remove an item from your watch list from your Account page or by clicking the Watch button again.

Closing Time

This is the time the auction will end, but "Popcorn Bidding" could add 10 minutes to the closing time. If a bid is placed within 10 minutes of the closing time, the auction will extend by 10 minutes. This allows competing bidders a chance to stay in the race.

Toys are Tools: Review & Giveaway: Qwirkle: Strategy 101

WHAT: Qwirkle by Mindware
DOES: simple rules allow for easy and fluid starts;? game scenario is ever-changing thus forcing you to be flexible
INVEST: $24.95
TOOLS: Flexibility is My Superpower, Remember to Learn, Lose and Win Gracefully (because points are on the side, you don't really tally until the end, so you're focused on shifting strategies instead)
EXPERT OPINION included:? Heather Goldman, PhD, Child Psychologist & Psychology Consultant, The Quad Manhattan
Giveaway Details below?

I had no intention of reviewing this game.? Like Scrabble, Connect Four, or Monopoly, I consider Qwirkle to be a real classic and so there isn't a need to review a game that everyone knows about, right?? And yet still, as with Imaginets, a reader asked about it but in this case, I had already purchased and had been using the game.? Thus, this time, I am using my reader's request as an excuse to talk about one of our favorite family games.

It is also Minnesota Week here.?? This week, Squishy Circuits Store, a Minnesota company, left Toys are Tools the loveliest note while discussing play and learning.? Additionally, another MN company's product review had quite a viral response this week which now means that four of Toys are Tools' top seven most read-reviews are Minnesota-borne products.? What are they all eating there?? Can Mindware.com can it and sell it to us online?

On a more serious note, I am intimidated by classic games. I feel I have to be very brainy in my approach or be extra interesting when talking about it. ? So here is one tidbit for starters: Qwirkle was born from a dream- not of the aspiring variety but rather the kind you get at night when you are asleep.

I wonder if the inventor has a notepad on her nightstand (like the dry version of an AquaNote). Regardless, one thing I do know is that creating a great game is not easy.? However, playing it should be easy but only easy enough to get started.? Mastery, on the other hand, should never be taken for granted. ? Capacity to win should change with each new opponent(s).? Only the best games are going to be designed to motivate players to master it and allow you to get to know others through play.? Qwirkle is one of those games.

Simple Rules But Not Simple Play

Qwirkle has pretty shapes painted on each black wooden tile.?? They don't look intimidating but don't be fooled.? This is a game for vipers as it is for innocently inquisitive children.? The object is to get points and it is relatively easy to get a point (age rec is 6+).? That is the simple part or what I like to call: the hook.

But here is the hard part: as the game scenario becomes more complicated and you are constantly looking at your pieces and all the possible moves you can make. Only the most patient and strategic thinkers will prevail.? Additionally, if you happen to feel comfortable with shapes and their place in space (visual-spatial skills), this game is for you!? If you aren't, then you will still love it because the design of these tiles don't intimidate.? They can practice their strategic thinking skills with blue flowers, green squares, purple circles, or purple stars, etc.? There are 108 of these gorgeous wooden tiles that feel good in your hands.

This dynamic duo seems so laid-back and friendly.? No glitz needed here.? It's very respectful to the viewer.

"So I would imagine that as you play this game more and more, you are increasing these skills" Child Psychologist, Heather Goldman, PhD.

I remember when Number 3 first played this game with us.? She was so motivated and so focused that she was breathing as if she was sipping air.?? Her eyes danced looking at the tile layout.? She couldn't stop smiling.? Qwirkle had been out since she was eight but she had never seen it before and she's now going to high school soon.? I love that.?? Watching her enjoy Qwirkle for the first time, I felt the same way I did when I watched my kid try and love sashimi with that monumental first bite, chew, and swallow.?? Like Qwirkle, sashimi is very simple and yet brilliantly complex.? It's about how much you take from it.?? Will you chew or will you savor?

Choose Strategy and Choose to Savor

Like I said, I need to be brainy.?? This game sports awards like an Olympic athlete so I wasn't about to write this review alone.?? I called Heather Goldman, PhD, child psychologist, and Psychology Consultant at The Quad Manhattan, to steal some thoughts as to why this game is so awesome.??

When I play Qwirkle with Number 1 Son, he totally kicks my butt.? This always intrigues me because I want to understand why he does well here. Heather said Qwirkle sort of reminded her of the neuropsychological batteries she does with kids to assess their abilities.?? With this particular game, what was very evident was that Qwirkle required you to "shift sets"? (a.k.a.? cognitive flexibility) which she described as being able to think in one way (make a row of red tiles) but then have to switch it (oh, wait, I can make a row of squares there).?? Gosh, this sounds just like Mine Shift to me!? Being flexible is such an important skill.? I'm glad he's practicing that.

She also talked about how Qwirkle brought out opportunities for kids to practice inhibiting impulses.? That makes sense.? It's so easy to score a point but to score a Qwirkle or position yourself for more points per tile would take more thought.

Crossword Puzzle Without the Words

Heather then brought up a perfect example of how a very similar strategy is exercised elsewhere. ? "Where that comes up is doing a crossword puzzle because you think a word fits but then you have to be aware of: 'Okay, but does that letter fit with other words?' " Heather said.? "You have to look at all the clues around that word."

This ability to process the information and then figure out the pattern and features is something Heather tests for often.? In some of these tests, she is not supposed to help them.? They have to figure out the pattern but they are not told what the pattern is.?

"As you play Qwirkle more and more, you probably get better at it," said Heather, adding that one of the interesting things that she must assess is how many trials it takes for a child to figure out the pattern.

"So I would imagine that as you play this game more and more, you are increasing these skills,"? she said referring to cognitive flexibility as one of the major skills being practiced.? This is more believable to me if I think about sashimi again.? I hope you've tried it.? Good sashimi blows sushi out of the water.? You really can choose to appreciate it and savor it with each new piece you place in your mouth.? Like wine, the more times you try it thoughtfully, the more you will understand and appreciate it.

Wow, that totally rocks.?? But wait, there's more!? The term executive-functioning came up often here.?? When you have a few tiles on the table, figuring out where you can score doesn't get too hard but as the tile rows increase in number and are positioned so that you can't just put any ol' tile anywhere, you must then rely on your working memory to help you remember where to score and which areas you need to keep an eye on.

Wait, working memory, executive functioning, flexibility, crossword puzzles?? Are we talking about Qwirkle here?? Because my kid is really strong with his game but I am looking at these words that I just listed and haven't really viewed them as his major strengths.? It's actually quite the opposite (except for flexibility-when he starts talking like a law student and argues everything to his favor).? But seriously, put a crossword in front of Number 1 and he will reflexively look out the window.

So how can he be so good at this game and not so good at those challenging skills I just mentioned?!?!? Come back next week to read why kids who rock at this game may not show these skills in school and how you can use Qwirkle as a tool. ? You'll have a chance to win Qwirkle Travel Edition too.? You will love it those pictures.? I promise!

Time to Win Your Own Qwirkle!? Remember to follow the rules!?? The winning game can only be shipped to the U.S.? Sorry to my Canadian readers!? I'm always thinking of you!!! Ends: July 10, 2012 12:01 AM EST

??

Dear Santa (because I'm already thinking about him now),

I do not review apps here but I certainly use them.? Can you ask Mindware.com to make an app for Qwirkle or how about Lab Mice?? I do believe it is possible.??? Also, please tell the elves that if they don't know what to give a family or a grade school kid as a gift, this game is an easy hit.? It's hard to go wrong.? Just make sure they don' t have it already!!!

Love,?
