'Vampire' plague victim spurs gruesome debate

What may have been an exorcism of a vampire in Venice is now drawing bad blood among scientists arguing over whether gravediggers were attempting to defeat an undead monster.

The controversy begins with a mass grave of 16th-century plague victims on the Venetian island of Nuovo Lazzaretto. The remains of a woman there apparently had a brick shoved in her mouth, perhaps to exorcise the corpse in what may have been the first vampire burial known in archaeology, said forensic anthropologist Matteo Borrini of the University of Florence in Italy.

Vampire superstitions were common when plague devastated Europe, and much, if not all, of this folklore could be due to misconceptions about the natural stages of decomposition, Borrini said. The recently dead can often appear unnervingly alive. As the corpse's skin shrinks and pulls back, for example, hair and nails may appear to grow after death.

7 ghoulish archaeological finds

The remains of the woman were apparently wrapped in a shroud, based on the position of her collarbone, Borrini suggested. A corpse might appear to have chewed through its shroud because of corrosive fluids it spewed as it decayed, perhaps frightening gravediggers into thinking it was a vampire. [ Our 10 Favorite Vampires ]

Vampire myths link the monsters with contagions, and the plague ran rampant in Venice in 1576, killing as many as 50,000 people, nearly a third of the city, including famed Renaissance artist Titian. The gravediggers that ran across this corpse may have wanted to prevent a vampire from ravaging the city further with pestilence, Borrini and his colleague Emilio Nuzzolese suggested in the Journal of Forensic Sciences in 2010. The "vampire" has since been discussed on Italian national TV and a National Geographic documentary.

    1. 16-year-old student sets off buzz over Newtonian physics

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: A research paper that claims to fill in a gap in Isaac Newton's formulas for the physics of falling objects has drawn worldwide attention to a 16-year-old student in Germany, but physicists are reserving judgment until they've seen the proof.

    2. Roman shipwrecks found nearly a mile deep

    4. Hare trigger: Camera shoots rare striped rabbit

However, now other researchers are openly deriding this claim. Where some might see an exorcism, these researchers see a brick accidentally falling into a skull's mouth.

"I find surprising that the reviewers of an important journal such as the Journal of Forensic Sciences had given permission to publish the article of Nuzzolese and Borrini with inadequate scientific evidence to support their hypothesis," physical anthropologist Simona Minozzi at the University of Pisa in Italy told LiveScience.

To start with, photos of the site where the purported vampire was found show her remains were surrounded by stones, bricks and tiles, Minozzi said. They also note the jaws of corpses often gape open, allowing any number of items to fall in ? for instance, they note a skeleton with a thighbone in its mouth was found in the cemetery of Vecchio Lazzaretto in Venice.

They also note there is no clear evidence of a shroud, as coffin walls might also explain the position of the collarbone. They add that the legend of the so-called nachzehrer, or " shroud-eaters," were apparently tightly confined to the East German region and not Italy. Minozzi and her colleagues detailed their argument in the May issue of the Journal of Forensic Sciences.

7 ghoulish archaeological finds

Minozzi called the vampire idea "nonsense." "Unfortunately, this is a common practice in the last few years in Italy," she said. "This is probably due to the strong cutting of funds for research in Italy, so researchers seek to attract attention and money through sensational discoveries that often have little to do with science."

Borrini and his colleagues strongly rebut the argument over their analysis. They discussed how the physical details of the site supported their interpretation in a response in the May issue of the Journal of Forensic Sciences, and that while the legend of the nachzehrer was found in Germanic areas, Venice was a crossroads during the epoch in which such legends from distant lands might have circulated.

"Regarding the criticism of my Italian colleagues, I have to admit that it's a quite unpleasant situation," Borrini said. "It seems that the main reasons of the interest in my research is its mass media success. Well, I want to be clear regarding this ? I never looked for the media."

It's in the genes: Research pinpoints how plants know when to flower

Tuesday, May 29, 2012

Scientists believe they've pinpointed the last crucial piece of the 80-year-old puzzle of how plants "know" when to flower.

Determining the proper time to flower, important if a plant is to reproduce successfully, involves a sequence of molecular events, a plant's circadian clock and sunlight.

Understanding how flowering works in the simple plant used in this study ? Arabidopsis ? should lead to a better understanding of how the same genes work in more complex plants grown as crops such as rice, wheat and barley, according to Takato Imaizumi, a University of Washington assistant professor of biology and corresponding author of a paper in the May 25 issue of the journal Science.

"If we can regulate the timing of flowering, we might be able to increase crop yield by accelerating or delaying this. Knowing the mechanism gives us the tools to manipulate this," Imaizumi said. Along with food crops, the work might also lead to higher yields of plants grown for biofuels.

At specific times of year, flowering plants produce a protein known as FLOWERING LOCUS T in their leaves that induces flowering. Once this protein is made, it travels from the leaves to the shoot apex, a part of the plant where cells are undifferentiated, meaning they can either become leaves or flowers. At the shoot apex, this protein starts the molecular changes that send cells on the path to becoming flowers.

Changes in day length tell many organisms that the seasons are changing. It has long been known that plants use an internal time-keeping mechanism known as the circadian clock to measure changes in day length. Circadian clocks synchronize biological processes during 24-hour periods in people, animals, insects, plants and other organisms.

Imaizumi and the paper's co-authors investigated what's called the FKF1 protein, which they suspected was a key player in the mechanism by which plants recognize seasonal change and know when to flower. FKF1 protein is a photoreceptor, meaning it is activated by sunlight.

"The FKF1 photoreceptor protein we've been working on is expressed in the late afternoon every day, and is very tightly regulated by the plant's circadian clock," Imaizumi said. "When this protein is expressed during days that are short, this protein cannot be activated, as there is no daylight in the late afternoon. When this protein is expressed during a longer day, this photoreceptor makes use of the light and activates the flowering mechanisms involving FLOWERING LOCUS T. The circadian clock regulates the timing of the specific photoreceptor for flowering. That is how plants sense differences in day length."

This system keeps plants from flowering when it's a poor time to reproduce, such as the dead of winter when days are short and nights are long.

The new findings come from work with the plant Arabidopsis, a small plant in the mustard family that's often used in genetic research. They validate predictions from a mathematical model of the mechanism that causes Arabidopsis to flower that was developed by Andrew Millar, a University of Edinburgh professor of biology and co-author of the paper.

"Our mathematical model helped us to understand the operating principles of the plants' day-length sensor," Millar said. "Those principles will hold true in other plants, like rice, where the crop's day-length response is one of the factors that limits where farmers can obtain good harvests. It's that same day-length response that needs controlled lighting for laying chickens and fish farms, so it's just as important to understand this response in animals.

"The proteins involved in animals are not yet so well understood as they are in plants but we expect the same principles that we've learned from these studies to apply."

Tomatometer Watch: Prometheus

In cyberspace, everyone can hear the critics scream.

We won't delve too deeply into it for fear of possible spoilers, but so far the word is strong -- well, strong enough, with plenty of praise for Scott's visuals and a sense of welcome return to sci-fi for the filmmaker, who hasn't touched the genre since 1982's Blade Runner.

"Not only does Prometheus herald the rebirth of Alien, it breaths life back into intelligent sci-fi," says Grant Rollins at the UK's Sun, while the Hollywood Reporter's Todd McCarthy says the movie brings "enough visual spectacle, tense action and sticky, slithery monster attacks to hit the spot with thrill-seeking audiences worldwide."

At The Guardian, however, Peter Bradshaw writes that Scott "has counter-evolved his 1979 classic Alien into something more grandiose, more elaborate -- but less interesting," and Variety's Justin Chang reports that Prometheus "remains earthbound in narrative terms, forever hinting at the existence of a higher intelligence without evincing much of its own."

Where will the critics meet on Prometheus? Scott's highwater mark is his 1977 debut The Duelists, which is at 100% (albeit with only 14 reviews aggregated), but the more appropriate comparisons in terms of genre would be Alien -- currently at 96% -- and Blade Runner, which is 92% fresh. We'd be surprised if the movie charts in that hallowed company, but it's gotta be better than Alien: Resurrection, right?

If you need to temper those expectations, of course, remember that Sir Ridley's last endeavor, 2010's underwhelming Robin Hood, earned a less than stellar 43% from critics.

Stay tuned for more reviews as they come in.

Prometheus is in theaters on June 8.

Be ready for the new gaming experiences | Web design tutorial

Holiday season is approaching fast and so is the gaming season. Considered the perfect time to turn consoles and games into commercial market. The biggest companies in the video game console business, Microsoft Corp., Sony Corp., and Nintendo corp., have come up with new games and services at the same time, targeting mainstream users like never before.

Earlier most video game consoles were aimed at serious players who spent the most money and time on games but now the companies are aiming at players who purchase game machines when their costs are reduced and when better arrays of titles become available.

So what are the offers?

Microsoft has clinched a deal with Netflix Inc., an online rental service, to stream movies over the Internet to Xbox 360 game machines. The announcement came on the eve of the Electronic Entertainment Expo Media and Business Summit, a major video game industry trade show in Los Angeles. The Xbox owners will now be able to watch movies streamed through game consoles to their TVs.

Sony is also expected to demonstrate its own service for downloading movies and television shows from the Internet to PlayStation 3s. According to Sony, this summer, its store for buying and renting movies and other video content on the PlayStation 3 should go online.

The credit of all these current moves, by Sony and Microsoft, goes to the sensational commercial success of rival Nintendo Co. Nintendo turned industry rules by going after casual game players with its Wii gaming system right from the day the console went on sale.

Nintendo stressed on fun intuitive Wii games. Instead of the costly and hyper-realistic graphics favored by hard-core players, it has been using the console?s motion-sensing controller. In the U.S., Microsoft and Nintendo are neck-to-neck in selling their latest generation of consoles.

It is slated to release a new video game accessory for its Wii game system, Wii Motion Plus. It will help improve responsiveness and precision in tracking the hand movements of players. The new accessory will attach to the existing motion-sensing controller. The device will enable even slight flicks of the wrist and arm to be rendered on screens.

California Senate passes bill for self-driving cars

A bill that would allow self-driving cars on California's roads has passed the California Senate.

The bill, SB1298, sponsored by Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Pacoima), establishes guidelines for "autonomous vehicles" to be tested and operated in California. The bill now goes to the Assembly for consideration next month.

Tech giant Google Inc., Caltech and other organizations have been working to develop such vehicles, which use radar, video cameras and lasers to navigate roads and stay safe in traffic without human assistance. Google Inc. has said that computer-controlled cars should eventually drive more safely than humans.

Padilla said his bill passed Monday without objection.

A number of lawmakers test drove Google's prototype autonomous Prius and "came away convinced that fostering this technology is the right direction for California," he said.

"Human error is the cause of almost every accident on the road today. If autonomous technology can reduce the number of accidents, then we also reduce the number of injuries and fatalities on California's roads," Padilla said. "For me this is a matter of safety."

Padilla added that he believes self-driving cars also will improve the fuel efficiency of vehicles, reduce emissions and enable cars to talk to one another to improve traffic flow.

Self-driving cars must legally have a person at the wheel, ready to assume control if anything goes wrong.

The bill does the following:

?Sets up safety and performance standards for the safe operation of autonomous vehicles on California's public roads;

?Allows for the operation of autonomous vehicles on California's public roads by a licensed driver;

?Requires that an autonomous vehicle meets all applicable safety standards and performance requirements in state and federal law;

?Allows the Highway Patrol, in consultation with the Department of Motor Vehicles, to recommend to the Legislature additional requirements for the safe operation of such vehicles on California's roads.

Last year, similar legislation was signed into law in Nevada. In addition, Arizona, Hawaii, Florida and Oklahoma are considering autonomous-vehicle legislation.

FREE IS MY LIFE: MOVIE REVIEW: Bernie

This movie review for "Bernie" was written by guest blogger Liz Parker...

Bernie was not at all what I thought it would be, even though I read a few reviews and what some might consider "spoilers" online before seeing it. The movie is based on real events that happened in Texas in 1996, when the companion of a wealthy elderly woman (Marjorie Nugent) shot her four times in the back. He then hid the body and pretended that she was still alive for the next several months until people eventually became suspicious and the police searched his home and found Marjorie's body. The story itself is fascinating, but unfortunately the movie, in my opinion, falls a little flat.

39-year-old Bernie Tiede (Jack Black, The Big Year) is a pillar of the community in Carthage, Texas, the small town where he resides. He's the assistant funeral director at the local funeral home, and he always follows up with the grieving widows afterwards to make sure they are doing okay. He sings in the church choir and everybody in town loves him. He eventually meets 81-year-old Marjorie Nugent (Shirley MacLaine, Valentine's Day) when her husband passes away, and he takes a special interest in her. She has children, but is estranged from them, and she takes Bernie on as her companion - not lover, as he was rumored to be gay - and they take many trips together, including vacations to New York City, Russia, and Paris. Soon, however, Marjorie begins to isolate Bernie from his friends and the town, and one day Bernie snaps and shoots her in the back. He then pretends she is sick whenever the townspeople begin to get curious, and he gets away with this charade for the next nine months.

The movie is set up in a documentary-type style, with real-life Carthage residents interspersed with actors, the most recognizable of whom are Black and MacLaine as Bernie and Marjorie, and Matthew McConaughey (The Lincoln Lawyer) as Danny Buck, the District Attorney who eventually goes on to prosecute Bernie. The actors who are playing townspeople all have a "small-town look" about them, and it's impossible to distinguish the real-life people from the actors. The film sets up the events with some zany moments throughout, and I found myself wondering what the people of Carthage will think about this movie and also Marjorie Nugent's relatives.

No, don't see this film. There were some funny parts but overall the movie couldn't really decide if it wanted to be factual or not, and even though Black's, MacLaine's, and McConaughey's performances were "spot-on," it wasn't enough to save the film for me. I found the story to be quite an interesting one, and it was interesting to look on Wikipedia afterwards to compare the real events to those depicted in the movie, but the film moved very slowly and I was constantly checking my watch throughout it. Jack Black's singing in the film was superb (who knew?!) and he does a good job in the title role, but ultimately you would be better off reading about the case online than spending time and money on Bernie.

Bernie?is in starting May 25th, and is rated PG-13 with a runtime of 104 minutes; in the metro Detroit area, it is playing at the Main Art Theater, Royal Oak. 2 stars out of 5.

Bathroom and Kitchen Floor Cabinets 101

Complete the look of your home with stylish floor cabinets. Cabinets are important, because they store the stuff that you do not need, giving you an immaculate-looking home. Instead of having piles of towels or kitchenware all over the house, there is a proper place when there is still no need for them. If you plan on purchasing kitchen floor cabinets or floor standing bathroom cabinets, here are some things that you need to consider.

Aesthetics
The best?floor cabinets?will not clash with your existing interior design. Whether you have a modern, traditional, or Zen design, the floor cabinet that you pick should be able to go blend seamlessly with your existing interior. With so many floor cabinet designs out there today, you only need time and patience to go through everything to find the perfect cabinet for your kitchen, bathroom, or bedroom. You can take pictures of the cabinets that you find attractive to look them over when you get home. An even better reason why you should do this is to check if you can score cheaper deals for the same cabinet online.

Practicality
While stylish cabinets are great, you are really buying it because you plan on putting things inside. It is far too easy to fall in love with a fancy cabinet design that is a great conversation piece, but hardly easy to use. If you have kids at home, it is important that it does not have pointy edges that can hurt them when they are horsing around the house. If you live in a small flat, make sure that the cabinet has a lot of storage space. Otherwise, you will be spending for something that does not maximize its allotted floor area.

Function
It is not enough that it is beautiful and usable; your cabinet must also fit the room. If you plan on using it for the bathroom, make sure that the floor cabinets you plan on getting can be used there. Remember that?bathroom floor cabinets?must be able to handle humidity well, mainly because the place is constantly wet. In fact, the fastest way to grow mold is to use the wrong kind of furniture for your bathroom.
If you are picking cabinets for the kitchen, take into account the space that you have, and the things that you plan to do in your kitchen. People who like making homemade jams, smoothies, and ?even smoke their own meats will have to get kitchen cabinets that can accommodate all these machines. Take into consideration the size of these machines to make sure that they fit inside your cabinet.?
While you should definitely think about aesthetics, functionality, and practicality, it is also important that you think about quality. You may be wary about shelling out a lot of money for your floor standing bathroom cabinets or your?kitchen floor cabinets, but you should realize that adding a few hundred bucks can guarantee that your furniture lasts a lifetime. If you skimp on these, you can end up with cabinets that will not last long, and you will probably have to replace after a few years.

FCC clears Sprint to run CDMA, 4G LTE on 800MHz iDEN airwaves

Sprint might not have its 4G LTE network up and running to power your EVO 4G LTE, but it's already getting more headroom. The FCC has just tweaked the rules around the ESMR (Enhanced Specialized Mobile Radio) spectrum to let Sprint, and the considerably more regional SouthernLINC Wireless, run their CDMA voice calls and LTE data on the 800MHz band they're currently using for their soon-to-end iDEN networks. In practice, the extra frequency access should be a tremendous help to at least Sprint, which hasn't had the low-level, indoors-friendly airspace that AT&T and Verizon enjoy with their 700MHz networks. Just don't expect your EVO or the rest of the initial Sprint LTE devices to take advantage any time soon, as you'll need to both get an 800MHz-ready phone as well as endure the long, long wait until Sprint switches on the extra LTE band in 2014.

Early Treatment by a Physical Therapist Associated with Reduced ...

A new study published in Spine shows that early treatment by a physical therapist for low back pain (LBP), as compared to delayed treatment, was associated with reduced risk of subsequent health care utilization and lower overall health care costs.

Using a national database of employer-sponsored health plans, researchers examined a sample of 32,070 patients who were newly consulting a primary care physician for low back pain. Patients were identified and categorized based on their use of physical therapist services within 90 days of the consultation. Those who were referred to a physical therapist early (within 14 days of the consultation) showed a reduced risk of subsequent health care utilization and experienced lower overall health care costs than did those patients with delayed treatment by a physical therapist (within 15-90 days of consultation).

During an 18-month follow-up period, researchers found that early treatment by a physical therapist was associated with reduced risk of subsequent surgery, injections, physician visits, opioid use, and advanced imaging, along with a corresponding reduction in overall LBP-related medical costs relative to delayed treatment by a physical therapist. Total health care costs for patients receiving early care from a physical therapist were an average of $2,736.23 lower.

According to the study's lead author, Julie M. Fritz, PT, PhD, ATC, associate professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Utah and clinical outcomes research scientist at Intermountain Health care in Salt Lake City, "The value of referring patients to physical therapy who are newly consulting primary care physicians for low back pain likely depends on the timing of the referral and how patients adhere to physical therapy guidelines that recommend maintaining and improving activity levels." She added, "Despite the fact that primary care practice guidelines generally recommend delaying referral to a physical therapist for several weeks, we found that about half the patients receiving treatment from a physical therapist did so within two weeks, which is a practice that may be justified by emerging evidence."

Fritz explained that one possible reason for the link between early care by a physical therapist and positive outcomes may be that physical therapists can contribute to promoting a greater sense of self-reliance in managing LBP and confidence in a positive outcome. "If a physical therapist's treatment assists in developing self-efficacy, it is reasonable to expect it would have greater impact when implemented very early, before negative expectations have become reinforced and entrenched." Fritz added that early care administered by a physical therapist may offer an alternative to management strategies that can foster a sense of dependency in the patient, such as use of MRI or opioids.

The study found that patients using a PPO plan were more likely to receive early treatment from a physical therapist (53.4%) as compared with those using an HMO plan (44.7%). Also, the highest rates of physical therapist utilization were found in the Northeast and West. Patients in the Midwest were more likely to seek early treatment from a physical therapist (58.7%).

An April 20 study in Spine also supports the benefits of early physical therapy for low back pain. In this study, researchers found that patients who received physical therapy early (within 30 days) after an episode of acute low back pain had a lower risk of subsequent medical service usage (surgery or epidural steroid injections) than patients who received physical therapy later. In this study, authors analyzed a national sample of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' physician outpatient billing claims.

Currently 47 states and the District of Columbia allow some form of direct access to physical therapists for treatment/intervention, although some states impose restrictions if patients have not been referred by a physician.

Coauthors of the study were John D. Childs, PT, PhD, associate professor and director of research, US Army-Baylor University Doctoral Program in Physical Therapy, Ft Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX; Robert S. Wainner, PT, PhD, associate professor, Texas State University - San Marcos, San Marcos, TX, and Timothy W. Flynn, PT, PhD, distinguished professor, Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions.

The study was funded by grants from the Orthopedic and Private Practice Sections of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and the American Academy of Orthopaedic and Manual Physical Therapists. Funds were also provided by a faculty grant from Texas State University.

The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) represents more than 80,000 physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and students of physical therapy nationwide. After 36 Marathons, One Radio Goes Silent - NYTimes.com

For each of the 36 years that the New York City Marathon has existed as a five-borough race, Steve Mendelsohn could be found in the lead vehicle with the race director, cruising along with the lead male runner and relaying messages on his ham radio.

But in November, Mr. Mendelsohn will not be there. He died Wednesday morning of pancreatic cancer at his home in Dumont, N.J., said his wife, Heidi. He was 67.

As the marathon?s longtime communications director, Mr. Mendelsohn was in charge of the roughly 400 ham radio operators who provide the communications system for the race.

Mr. Mendelsohn may not have been a household name in the running world, but he was well known to the many race officials and volunteers.

He would start his work each summer, recruiting and organizing radio operators from across the country to be deployed along the racecourse to help with communications and to step in if cellphones failed. He would spend his weekends driving parts of the course to test radio coverage.

Mr. Mendelsohn put together the communications system in the early years of the marathon, when ham radios were needed to relay information about mishaps and the leaders as the race unfolded. He would program the hand-held radios and distribute them to operators who would shadow officials and keep them in radio contact. The operators would also provide information to medical personnel and others about runners who had dropped out or had been injured.

I met Mr. Mendelsohn shortly before the marathon last fall. As we walked around the finish area in Central Park, he spotted the statue of Fred Lebow, the marathon?s charismatic co-founder and longtime director.

Mr. Mendelsohn was alongside Mr. Lebow as he built the race over the years. And he watched him fight brain cancer after the disease was diagnosed in 1990. Mr. Lebow died in 1994. Mr. Mendelsohn walked up to the statue, gave it a loving pat and repeated the mantra ? ?Another year, my friend? ? that they would greet each other with every year when reuniting for the race.

Mr. Mendelsohn confided then that the 2011 marathon would be his most meaningful one ? simply because he had lived to see it. He said he was dying of cancer, having learned the diagnosis in January 2011 and been told that he most likely had only a few months to live.

?He felt he had to do at least one more for Fred,? Ms. Mendelsohn said in an interview on Wednesday.

In November, Mr. Mendelsohn had been undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment, and he was down to 110 pounds and had trouble walking. He said he felt he had already outlived the prognosis. He attributed this to his enthusiasm about working another marathon and the support of fellow radio enthusiasts.

?All my ham radio guys are praying for me, and I feel that energy,? he said at the time.

He said he knew his days were numbered. He said he would use the 2012 marathon ?as the hope for another year.? As it turned out, Mr. Mendelsohn wound up working several other races before he died, including a Miami marathon in January and a half-marathon and a triathlon.

?We would have lost him a year ago if it weren?t for him being able to keep working the races ? he just loved the adrenaline,? Ms. Mendelsohn said.

?He was in no shape to do it, but he was determined to work them anyway, because he lived for these races,? she said. ?No matter what he felt like, he just never missed anything. His attitude was, ?As long as I am physically able, I?m just going to go out and do it.??

Mr. Mendelsohn grew up in Amityville, N.Y., and built his own ham radio at age 14. He served as a cryptologist in the Navy and then worked in radio and television for CBS and ABC as a communications technician, helping to design the mobile production trucks for large news and sports events, including ?Monday Night Football.?

He also served for more than a dozen years as the game-day frequency coordinator for the Jets, making sure the coaches? headsets and walkie-talkies worked. Ms. Mendelsohn said Rex Ryan, the head coach, and Mark Sanchez, the starting quarterback, and other team members visited him at home while he was sick.

Mr. Mendelsohn?s work with the marathon began in 1975, when the marathon needed a city-mandated communications system as it prepared to expand beyond Manhattan, he said. Mr. Lebow had gone to a meeting of ham radio operators and met Mr. Mendelsohn, who recruited 30 volunteers to take positions along the course for the 1976 race.

?The Police Department?s citywide system couldn?t do it, so ham radios became the main communication to span the city? for the race, he said.

Mr. Mendelsohn was always leery of cellphone coverage, with thousands of spectators simultaneously using their phones near the finish line.

In November, he said he had surprised his doctors by surviving a case of sarcoidosis, a lymphatic system disease, five years earlier. He called his work on the marathons crucial to his survival.

?The enormous energy, like you feel at the starting line, gives me the power to stay alive,? he said.

Samsung Galaxy S III shows in Best Buy Canada leak due June 20th, maple syrup uncorked to celebrate

Image

Jitters have persisted that the Canadian release of the Galaxy S III might face the customary weeks-long delays that those north of the border are used to. If we go by what looks to be an escaped Best Buy Canada flyer graphic, Samsung's Android 4.0 beast should be going up for pre-orders soon -- MobileSyrup hears May 30th -- with launches on at least Bell, Rogers, Telus and a Bell-owned Virgin Mobile around June 20th. We know that Samsung has publicly promised a US release in June, so there's a real chance that we could be seeing a simultaneous North American appearance that brings everyone together in TouchWiz harmony. There's still some big questions left open even if we're seeing an accurate snapshot, such as when Mobilicity, Wind and other LTE-less carriers will get their units as well as whether or not the LTE versions use Snapdragons instead of the Exynos 4 Quad.

[Thanks, Imdad]

HBT: Now even MLB debunking Yankee sale rumors

UPDATE: Apparently the ?Yankees could be sold? thing is a rumor so baseless that even MLB has issued a statement on the thing:

? ?Major League Baseball has received no indications from any representatives of the New York Yankees or anyone else that the Club is for sale.?

So, in addition to the owners calling the news story ?fiction,? there being no practical way for the team to be sold due to tax consequences and one of the writers of the article itself all but admitting it?s bull, the league has called it nonsense.

Good work, Daily News! ?Please remember this the next time one of the people who work for you point at some internet writer and accuse them of ruining journalism.

9:01 AM: I tell ya, if George Steinbrenner were alive he?d be so mad at how the Yankees have been playing he?d get rid of the team! THE ENTIRE TEAM!

Rumors are flying in Major League Baseball and New York banking circles that the family that has owned Major League Baseball?s premiere franchise since Cleveland shipbuilder George Steinbrenner purchased the club for $8.8 million in 1973 is exploring the possibility of selling the Yankees.

Multiple baseball and finance sources told the Daily News they are hearing that the team the Steinbrenner family has led to seven World Series titles could be put on the block in the wake of the record sale price of $2.175 billion the Los Angeles Dodgers went for in April.

While it would seem to make decent financial sense to at least consider the possibility ? if the Dodgers are worth a couple of billion the Yankees have to be worth more and, really, how much higher can franchise values go? ? team president Randy Levine denied the rumors, saying that ?there is absolutely, positively nothing to this.? Hal Steinbrenner called it??complete fiction.?

What?s more, the speculation in the article about it being a good time because the team is aging should probably be ignored. Because really, the value of the Yankees is not something that is going to crater or peak based on a ten-game swing of wins from one year to the rest. If they are ever sold it will be because someone is valuing them as an enduring entertainment and marketing brand, not as a team that, in a given year, may contend in the AL East.

That said, (a) if I was thinking of selling the team I wouldn?t admit it either; and (b) again, how much higher can franchise values climb? ?If someone wanted to give you, I dunno, three billion for the Yankees, wouldn?t you be an idiot not to take it? That?s the likely source of this stuff ? banker speculation and out-of-the-loop figurin?, not any real interest on the Yankees part to sell.

UPDATE: This seems to have less meat to it than a vegan cookout:

But hey, it?s fun to make stuff up too. ?Also: Bill Madden of the Daily News is apparently on New York radio this morning being asked about it and people who are listening are saying that he?s all but saying it?s a b.s. story but is stopping just short given that, you know, his colleagues wrote it. ?Oh, wait, his name is second on the byline. ?Great job, Spink Award Winning Writer Bill Madden!

DNA vaccine and duck eggs protect against hantavirus disease

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

Army scientists and industry collaborators have successfully protected laboratory animals from lethal hantavirus disease using a novel approach that combines DNA vaccines and duck eggs. The work appears in a recent edition of the online scientific journal PLoS ONE, published by the Public Library of Science.

According to first author Jay W. Hooper of the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID), this is the first time that the DNA vaccine/duck egg system has been shown to produce an antiviral product capable of protecting against hantavirus disease.

Hantavirus causes a condition known as hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), which has a case fatality rate of 35-40 percent. Currently there are no vaccines, prophylactics, or therapeutics to prevent or treat this highly pathogenic disease.

In this study, the research team used a hamster model of Andes virus, which is the predominant cause of HPS in South America and the only hantavirus known to be transmitted person-to-person. Infection of Syrian hamsters with Andes virus, as demonstrated in earlier studies at USAMRIID, results in a disease that closely mimics human HPS in incubation time, symptoms of respiratory distress, and disease pathology. This makes it an ideal system for evaluating the feasibility of postexposure protection strategies.

Collaborating with Aldevron of Fargo, N.D. and the Universidad del Desarrollo in Santiago, Chile, Hooper and his team first evaluated a natural product, human polyclonal antibody, which was obtained as fresh frozen plasma (FFP) from a patient who survived HPS. Their results indicate that FFP shows promise as a post-exposure preventive treatment for HPS.

The team then vaccinated ducks with a DNA vaccine against Andes virus. This vaccine, initially developed and tested at USAMRIID, uses genetic material, or DNA, that encodes a specific hantavirus gene to elicit an immune response in the recipient.

Next, they purified an antibody called IgY from the yolks of the duck eggs. This purified IgY, as well as a similar version produced in duck eggs, was capable of neutralizing Andes virus when tested in cell culture. More importantly, it also protected Syrian hamsters from lethal HPS?even when administered as a single injection several days after the hamsters had been exposed to a lethal dose of virus.

The work demonstrates the feasibility of using DNA vaccine technology, coupled with the duck/egg system, to manufacture a product that could supplement or replace FFP. Furthermore, the new approach can be scaled as needed and eliminates the necessity of using blood products from HPS survivors, which may be in limited supply.

According to Hooper, another advantage of this technique is that duck IgY naturally loses a part of the antibody that has been associated with "serum sickness" when animal antibodies have been used in humans, making the product potentially less reactogenic.

"This antiviral product, if fully developed and manufactured, has the potential to be used in future outbreak situations," Hooper said. "It also could be used to treat health care workers and others who have close contact with HPS patients."

In addition, the authors suggest, the flexibility of the DNA vaccine/duck egg system could be applied to the production of antibodies against other infectious agents and toxins.

Divas sizzle on Maxim?s Hot 100

Since gracing the cover of Maxim in December, the beautiful Kelly Kelly has been climbing the prestigious men?s magazine?s ranks, shooting up to No. 38 on Maxim?s Hot 100 of 2012! And this year, she?s joined by more familiar faces in the WWE Universe ? Layla, Stacy Keibler and Maria Menounos.

?I am so excited,"?Kelly Kelly told WWE.com. "Honestly I had no idea. I thought maybe I?d end up in the 60s, or if I was lucky, in the 50s. But when I got 38, I thought this is the craziest thing!??

?I beat Kate Upton, who was on the cover of Sports Illustrated. I beat Adriana Lima, who?s in Victoria?s Secret ? all of these big names. I couldn?t be happier!?

Last year, the former Divas Champion made the list at No. 82. But Kelly?s rise to the top is truly a testament to the power of the WWE Universe, as for the first time in Maxim history, the magazine?s readers weighed in on who should be on ?the definitive list of the world?s most beautiful women.?

?I give all the credit to the WWE Universe," Kelly said. "They were sending me Tweets about voting, and I was constantly re-Tweeting them. I have more than 522,000 followers now and they were really on it. I give all the credit to them. I got this because of them. I can?t thank the WWE Universe enough for voting for me!? (FOLLOW @REALKELLYKELLY)

Divas Champion Layla also made Maxim?s Hot 100 for the first time, clocking in at No. 95.

?I?m in total shock," Layla said with a smile. "I?ve only been back about four weeks and I didn?t even know I was nominated. The WWE Universe voted me in!??

?I want to say thank you very much to everybody who voted me in. ? I?ve never been in Maxim. So I feel very special. Thank you, guys. It?s awesome. It?s been a great 2012 so far. I couldn?t ask for anything more this year.?

Another notable name on the list is former WWE Diva Stacy Keibler at No. 51. It?s the bombshell?s seventh consecutive year being ranked by Maxim!

Also, Kelly Kelly?s WrestleMania XXVIII tag team partner Maria Menounos clocks in at No. 64. It?s the first time the "Extra"?host and "Dancing with the Stars"?alum earned the Maxim honor.

?I?m excited to be on the list with her,? Kelly Kelly said about Menounos. ?I think we?re both hot girls and we competed at WrestleMania together, so it?s really cool to be on the Hot 100 with her.

?But I am glad I beat her,? Kelly laughed.

Kelly Kelly promised this isn?t the last time the WWE Universe will see her on Maxim?s Hot 100. She?s set a new goal for herself ? to make the top 10!

?Hopefully I can get another cover out this year ? and I?ll be in the top 10. That?s my dream!?
